Seven days ago, I was sitting on the beach enjoying myself. Seemingly not having a care in the world. I had a good wife, loving kids and a job to kill for. Then it all started with a phone call that afternoon waking me from my slumber with a frantic voice.
“They’re gone, Mike, they’re all gone!”
“Slow down”, I said, trying to figure out who it was.
“This is Tom, and the prototypes for the new remote family cars are gone”.
“WHAT??” I came completely out of my beach chair, hitting my head on the umbrella.
“What? How are they gone? You and I are the only ones with the key to the building?”
“They didn’t use a key, sir, they took the whole side of the wall off.”
I don’t remember much of the rest of the day, except dropping my phone in the sand. I awoke much later that night by some beach party going on with a bunch of teens. I went back to my hotel room only to find that it had been ransacked. Much to my dismay my laptop and all my work and all my stuff was gone. And to make matters worse, I left my phone at the beach. Still not sure what to do about the prototypes stolen, I tried to get my ticket changed to go home early.
“I am sorry, sir, there is nothing we can do for you.”
“How is it that you can’t change the day on my ticket for today or tomorrow?” I said.
“Your ticket is a non-changeable ticket, you purchased it with those specifications on your business account purchase. I am sorry, but you’ll have to buy another ticket.“
She said it with a smile like she almost enjoyed causing me additional pain and suffering. I was irate, but stuck with a four hundred dollar plane ticket home and not knowing that it was going to get worse.
Upon arrival, Tom met me at the gate and trying to fill me in on all the details of two weeks into about ten minutes. Still in shock that the prototypes were stolen; I did my best to keep a cool head to figure out the situation. However, all was lost when I got home to find my house destroyed, my wife and children gone, and every bit of information on my project was gone. Standing there in shock as Tom was shuffling through the stuff like he was looking for something suddenly grabbed my arm and walked me back to the car.
“We have to get out of here, it isn’t safe here now.”
“What do you mean it isn’t safe? This is my home and where is my family?”
“There are things you should know about the project. This isn’t the place, let’s go.”
So we traveled down to his office as he filled me in on the major conspiracy going on in the company with embezzlement, false reports to the government, and the restrictions the government put on the company for making the project, and the deception of the company about the project being made. I had no idea that the company was selling the projects to foreign countries for more money. I couldn’t believe it. But then I came out of my daze when Tom said there is more bad news.
“How can there be more bad news? It can’t get any worse than right now!”
“Mike, your name is on all the documents, work orders, everything.”
Now as I sit here in my cell, thinking back and still not knowing where my family is, I realized that after a long and lengthy trial, the government is going to need a fall guy, me. And as I sat there thinking of the events that had taken place and not knowing what would happen next, I tried making my phone call to my parents, hoping to reach out and get some help and someone who would believe me, turned out to be a one ended screaming session.
With Bubba as my cell mate and my life completely turned upside down, when I used to be the main man, the top dog, respected and loved, when I needed my family the most, now nobody will talk to me. (to be continued)
