A child stood shivering on the street,
a mound of sleet around his feet.
His hair was ragged and uncombed,
he cried out, "Why's Momma been gone so long?"
His lips were arched into a frown,
brown eyes flinched as he looked around.
His coat was wet, holes in his pants,
he shifted back and forth in a prance.
I reached out and offered him my hand,
he looked up saying, "Thank you Madam."
I put my coat around him,
his eyes glittered as he gave me a grin.
"Why are you out here in the cold?"
Answering, "My parents are gone, I'm all alone."
"They've been gone for maybe a week,
I came here to find something to eat."
Asking, "Do you have a son?"
I'll bet you two have lots of fun."
"Momma and Dad don't worry about me,
they like their drinks and want to be free."
"I'm like a thorn in their sides,"
tears swelling up in his eyes.
"Now go, don't you worry about me,
God's standing here and knows my needs."
"I've made it for years on my own,
God is my Shepherd -- He never leaves me alone."
