Healing
There are many times in my life that I have hurt someone, both consciously and unconsciously, and there are many times that I've been hurt myself. Do you have scars?
When someone hurts us, it can be devastating. We can't assess the damage while we hurt and it seems to take forever to begin the healing process and even longer to trust that person again. All of us have seen the deep scars left from sorrow that was inflicted on us or witnessed the anguish that we have caused others.
Can you imagine the pain of Judas, the betrayer (Matthew 27:1-5)? He witnessed the miracles of Jesus. He touched His healing hands. He looked into the eyes of Jesus while having a conversation. He heard the words of Jesus as He preached to the crowds. He pretended to follow Jesus but broke His heart in the end.
A simple kiss changed history forever (Matthew 26:49). That kiss sealed Jesus fate and put the nails in Jesus hands and feet. That kiss was worth thirty silver coins and cost Jesus his life.
Jesus knows what it's like to be deceived. He walked with His twelve disciples for three years but when the going got tough, they fled. When He needed their friendship, they fell asleep (Matthew 26:40,43). When He needed their trust, he was sold (Matthew 26:14-15).
Yet, Jesus begged His Father to forgive His betrayers even while nailed to the cross (Luke 23:34). What hypocrites they were - what hypocrites we still are! Yes, we are betrayers of Jesus. Each time we sin we hurt Jesus over and over and over again. "Crucify HIM!" the crowds yelled..."Crucify Him." And so we did. We crucified Jesus with our hateful words; we crucified Jesus with our selfishness; we crucified Jesus with our dishonesty; and we crucified Jesus with our deception. "Crucify HIM! (Matthew 27:23)
Yes, Jesus knows what it's like to be betrayed; much better than we do but He didn't give up on us. We crucified Him yet He offered His comfort and sustaining love to those who accept His sacrifice. He took those beautiful scars and turned them into His shining stars. He gave His life so that we may live with Him forever. He did it all so that no one will be left behind (John 3:16). For God did not send His son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because He has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son (John 3:17-18).
If you have not accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour, you continue to betray yourself and Jesus. We MUST reach for the stars and accept the gift of God...His Son. The Gift of knowing that you will never speak the words of Jesus when he cried, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46).
