“Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. But David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker” 2nd Samuel 3:1(KJV).
The fulfillment of the prophecy was growing to its fullness by the day even as the house of Saul was diminishing in strength. Then it came to the state where those serving the house of Saul began to usurp authority and assume rights that they would not have dared to were the house of Saul in its power, and one of those doing this was Abner. In due time the house of David was established over Israel and what was left from the house of Saul ate from the King’s table.
In another place Christ said this “.. ye cannot serve God and mammon” Lk.16: 13(KJV). There is a house of mammon and there is the house of God. There are those who are of the house of mammon and those who are of the house of God. But the unique thing is this; that those of the house of mammon can live and operate in the house of God, while none of the house of God can do likewise in the house of mammon. So the house of mammon has this advantage i.e. of being able to have his own people in the house of God while God does not allow His own to be found anywhere near the house of mammon. Now even though the house of David was meant to rule over the house of Saul, Abner who was of the house of Saul contributed in no small measure to fulfilling this rather quickly because he broke faith with the house of Saul. And we are bringing this up here because nobody in the house of God would want to say of himself that he is truly of the house of mammon, none would readily admit to breaking faith with the house of God. The rulers of the house of mammon love it this way because the devil loves creating ideas without claiming copyrights. He would even encourage you to testify that this ‘blessing’ was done and giving by God. He does not like his name being mentioned. So when men and women stand in the house of God they can easily say with all assurance (i.e. that the devil would not be angry with them) that ‘The Lord has done it’. But the fruits (if looked at closely) would show that it is the devil’s handiwork. Because if one says ‘praise The Lord I’ve gotten a new job!’ and ignores the “inconsequential” detail that he bribed his way into getting that job, then the truth is that it is not really God that gave him the job. But the devil doesn’t mind, rather he derives untold pleasure in giving God credit when it has nothing to do with Him. There are indeed those of the house of mammon in the house of God but the rulers of the house of mammon don’t mind; they encourage it.
Will they ever loose the war? Well, there is a guarantee that the war will not end now. That is, it will continue till Christ comes, literarily. So loosing is a non-issue because it is like a war-without-end. But of course, doctrinally speaking, they will loose in the end. In fact (still speaking doctrinally), they have already lost because the devil has been defeated. But even as you read this, there is someone in some house of God somewhere saying ‘praise The Lord’ when such a person should be in the house of mammon saying that very thing. That is to say, the war continues because the battle is for each and every soul. Christ has the souls (i.e. in the house of God) but the devil still fights. And it’s not just the soul as it being the end of the matter but each time a temptation rises to tug at the heart and faith of the faithful, each time one capitulates at and to a lie, the house of mammon scores one “little” victory. But to that person, because of that one soul, the victory is not little but great. Whenever one stands in the house of God and gives credit to God when such a person, the devil, and God knows that the glory does not really belong to God, that particular victory goes to the devil. So the war will not end though there is a way out of this, because you can just make up your mind to bring that war to an end in you. That is, the house of mammon can grow weaker and weaker as long as it has to do with you. That each battle will end with victory that will be to The Lord because you will give to Him what belongs to Him and nothing of you would go to the devil anymore.
But there may still be those who are not really convinced that there are those of the house of mammon living and operating in the house of God. By now you would have gathered that we are talking of those whose quest for wealth has made them to become disciples of mammon. And we are talking of those within the house, not those without. Let’s see a man that was in this exact state in the scriptures.
“And, behold, one came and said unto Him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And He said unto him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou would enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto Him? Jesus said, thou shalt do no murder, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not steal, thou shall not bear false witness…the young man saith unto Him, all these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus saith unto him, if thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.”
This man came to realize the house he truly belonged to but there are many today that don’t. There are those in the house of God who in the pursuit of the prosperity of God has turned aside to that which belonged to mammon. There is a difference between the prosperity of mammon and that of God. They both bring wealth but there is a difference. And it was this difference that Christ showed the “young man” by addressing the crux of that man’s issue. But as the laws were being fulfilled by the young man, so also these ones do those things in the house of God that are after Godliness i.e. as long as there true allegiance is not touched. Christ challenged the man’s allegiance by poking at his true god. The mark of the house of mammon was found upon him and the man decided to keep faith with the house he belonged to. Those of the house of mammon would always keep faith with it. They would do everything that needs to be done in the house of God, as long as it doesn’t affect there true place of worship or go contrary to it.
“ And He said unto them, take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which He possesseth”Lk12: 15(KJV).
Look at who Christ called covetous (Vs.13), the man had a ‘legitimate’ case. He was not after something that was not ‘rightfully’ his and note that he was “of the company” i.e. he too was probably of the house of God. There are those who have not really looked at the mirror and seen themselves. They still have ‘legitimate’ and ‘right’ reasons why they are after mammon (but of course it’s the ‘pursuit’ of God’s prosperity). But which house do you belong to? The young man was bearing the ‘right’ fruits but there was something hidden. In fact the fruits he ‘bore’ were ‘borne’ deliberately to hide that which he didn’t want to be revealed. Unfortunately, it was to Christ that he went to show-off to.
And these people like putting their good deeds first. They cover themselves or there true motives with scripture (because it is good to maintain good works). But a man’s heart will be where his treasure is (Matt.12: 34). Touch the treasure and like the young man, the heart, the faith, and the house he belongs to would be revealed. Maybe its time this revelation begins to happen en mass. Or perhaps one can personally see to his because Christianity is all about one i.e. you. Let the house of mammon grow weaker and weaker in you until it is completely dominated by the house of God. Since we all know that the prophecy favors The House of God. And in the end that House would eventually prevail.
