“Delight yourself also In the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4 (NKJ)
This verse is one of my favorite all time verses in the Bible. It was shortly after I yielded my life to the Lord in 1988 that I discovered this promise. From the first time I heard it, I clung to it; I believed it was God’s word to me to give me hope.
At that time my greatest desire had been to find a husband and have a family. I was twenty-two when I finally gave my heart to Jesus. Somehow I had this idea that I was becoming an old maid and all I wanted was to be married. (I thank God I never found anyone while I was living my life on my own.) When I became a Christian I had renewed hope of finding mister right. I spent about three years learning, and growing in the Lord, all the time clinging to that scripture. In His perfect time, He flew my promise across the sea and brought him right to my living room door.
The key to this verse is that our responsibility is to delight in Him. As we draw close to the Lord and make Him the center of our whole life, He can then give us the desires of our hearts. It is not until we yield to Him, find our joy in Him, and delight in Him that He can give us what we want. You see, if we do not have our hearts and minds renewed in the Lord daily, than our desires are not pure and He cannot honor them. To do so would be detrimental to us. But as we surrender to Him, then our desires become His desires, good desires, and He can give us what we want because now our desires are beneficial and good.
Delight yourself in God. Read His promises to you. When you discover that His plans for your life are full of blessings, it is not hard to find your joy in Him. As you do, you will see your desires being fulfilled beyond what you could ever have imagined. God fulfilled my desire for a husband, and He gave me one that was far greater than I could have expected!
