But these chains don’t define me!
Guilty even when innocent, made hard though my heart is soft, with these chains could anyone really know? When I cry the tears are salty, when I pray my spirit is filled and the emptiness has become so familiar that it too runs deep into my soul.
But these chains don’t define me!
A loss suffered and a chosen path, now every move is chosen for me. When told to come I come and to go, I go now only in my heart can I ever run free.
But these chains don’t define me!
A debt to society completely paid and yet never forgiven, these chains of disgrace for a failure, a capture, a past, and yet still these chains don’t define me!
No, these chains they don’t define me, but the ones that do are the same as the ones that will ultimately define you.
The unseen chains, are those of fear or defeat, uncertainty, confusion and pain, they’re the questions without answers that ring so loudly in our minds.. Who can I trust, where can I go, who even cares and how will I know?
Oh yes, if these are the chains that define me, they make me just like you!
