Yesterday, I was at the National Bookstore when I chanced upon the latest November 2005 issue of Time Magazine. What I discovered shocked me! Looking over its cover story on global health, these are some painful facts I learned about the state of the health of the world today:
"Six million children -- and even more adults -- die unnecessarily every year."
"The latest figures suggest that malaria sickened 300 million people last year and killed 3 million -- most of them under age 5. What makes the malaria deaths particularly tragic is that malaria, unlike AIDS, can be cured."
"Up to 1 million Chinese are HIV positive. And that number could easily grow by 10 million by 2010, according to the joint UN program on AIDS."
"New scourges are emerging - AIDS is not the only one - and older diseases like tuberculosis are rapidly evolving into forms that are resistant to antibiotics, the main weapon in the doctor's arsenal. For all the vaunted power of modern medicine, deadly infections are a growing threat to everyone, everywhere."
Time Magazine cover story writer, Nancy Gibbs, writes: "The 'we're safe, it's far away' illusion has died; the sense of being stalked by a disease is now felt in rich countries as well as poor; and we find we have something in common with people who live with such fear everyday."
Medical literature and world news reports corroborate the findings on the increase of threats to our health. Today, there are:
... more than 1 million kinds of bacteria
... 100,000 species of fungi (some allergenic and harmful)
... over 2000 types of viruses and 130 types of parasites
... more than 200 types of cancer cells
... about 88 autoimmune diseases like cancer, cardiovascular inflammation, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and so on resulting from these threats
The Time Magazine report as well as these other unexplainable facts about the increase of disease in our world today makes me wonder a lot. What is happening? Inspite of man's incredible leaps of advancement in medicine and technology, we're getting less better in terms of health care and healing.
Are we losing this war?
It is true that you don't experience missing something until you lose it. If I apply that truth to the loss of my wife whom I dearly love, it is truly painful. If I apply that to the loss of children, large sums of money, a prized job, or a business, I will realize how true is the statement.
And if I apply it to the loss of health, it is true indeed! Everything stops when we lose our health. The trouble is, in the case of health, most people just take it for granted. Only when disease strikes that people begin to miss their health! We therefore cannot take our health for granted. Otherwise, we will be sorry someday.
Perhaps, this may explain why millions of people in the world today are experiencing a terrible crisis in health (as Time magazine reported). You and I will notice that the leading causes of death in the world today are cancer, heart disease, penumonia, lung, kidney, and liver disease and so on. Very few die of old age nowadays!
Health experts agree that all these diseases that the world are experiencing are related to a breakdown in our body resistance. God has provided mother nature to take care of our bodies against disease and infection. It's our very own internal doctor. That internal doctor is called our "immune system." In the absence of a strong immune system, even a tiny microbe or bacteria or a mere speck of dust is capable of killing us all within a few hours. Just imagine that!
Medical doctors tell us that there is a molecule in colostrums in mothers that takes care of our body's foundational immune system. Colostrum is the first "milk" that a mother produces immediately after giving birth. The mother's colostrum transfers immunity to the baby to protect the baby against various viruses, microbes, and parasites. Scientists call this immunity molecule the "transfer factor." "Transfer factors" strengthen the immune system.
Extensive medical research reveals that this immunity molecule from a human mother's colostrum is "molecularly the same" for all mammals, such as cows. After over 50 years and $40 million dollars spent on research, more than 3000 scientific papers are now published on "transfer factors" to firmly establish this fact, among others.
And they discovered that we can extract "transfer factors" from cow colostrum to provide humans with similar heroic immune systems as what the cows have. "Transfer factors" are scientifically proven to be "non-species specific", meaning they can be used for humans even if the original source is from a different mammal. What a great scientific breakthrough! Now, I wonder, why did God do this?
How do we sufficiently deal with today's growing threats to our health? The good news is, we have Mother nature again coming to the rescue! "Transfer factors" are Mother Nature's way of supporting, training, and strengthening our immune system.
That Time news feature on global health that I showed you does remind us that we do live in extraordinary times. Pollution, nutrient-deficient foods, mutating diseases compromise our health. Doctors now say that antibiotics used to fight infections have been found to harm our immune system when used long term. People's immune systems are becoming unresponsive to drugs for healing. Simply put, we are now, and will continue to be exposed to greater threats to our health. Viruses, diseases, and other pathogens have been traveling with great ease nowadays!
However, Mother Nature has already provided us our immune system as our defense to microbes found in our environment. In 1949, Dr. H. Sherwood Lawrence made a revolutionary discovery while studying tuberculosis. He determined that an immune response could be transferred from a donor to a recipient by injecting an extract of white blood cells (leukocytes) from a previously infected, now healthy, subject into a newly infected patient. He found that this extract contained a factor capable of transferring immunity. He named the substance "transfer factor."
Dr. Lawrence's discovery came in the midst of the discovery and use of antibiotics. Transfer factors have been used throughout the antibiotic age in different regions of the world such as China, Poland, Italy, and others. In the 50 years since Dr, Lawrence's pioneering discovery, an estimated $40,000,000 has been spent on research resulting in over 3,000 published scientific papers on documenting the benefits of transfer factors.
