GOOD SAMARITAN …POEM

James P. Gram

Luke 10

A certain man was traveling down
The road to Jericho;
He had no means of self defense
As far as we can know

Well, anyway, the robbers came
And robbed and nearly killed him;
They took his clothes and all his gold
And wounded head and limb

By chance a priest came by and looked
And took the road’s far shoulder;
“I wouldn’t touch that guy no matter
Who gave me the order”

And then a Levite came along
A might holy guy;
But still the wounded man was left;
The Levite passed him by

But then a certain traveler
Samaritan, you know;
Was sorry for the bloody wretch
Whose life was ebbing low

Samaritans were not well liked
In fact here’s how they rated:
Cheats, low lives and trash they said
Well, really, they were hated

But this Samaritan we believe
Thought nothing of his race;
Or what most others thought of him
Or mocked him to his face

He patched him up and set him on
His donkey for a ride
“He needs some care and someone to
Take care of him inside”

So onward went this motley crew
A sign hove into sight;
Here’s an inn for food and drink
And lodging for the night

So in they went and got a room
Samaritan and guest;
He bound his wounds and got him food
And tucked him in to rest

Next day the Good Samaritan
Prepared to hit the road;
He said to the good innkeeper
(At least it’s what we’re told)

“Here is my account in full
And here’s some more for you;
That wounded man can’t travel yet
Here’s what we need to do”

“Give that poor devil food and care
And if the bill is greater
I’ll settle up when I return
Quite soon, or maybe later”

Two people here you must admire
They helped through thick and thin
One the Good Samaritan
And one who ran the inn

They helped from love and fullest trust
In faith they did their labors;
Examples set, they showed the way
That designates good neighbors.
