“And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the First day.” (Genesis 1:5-31)
Time is of essence in everything that we do, without time or a consciousness of it we would be drifters in a timeless capsule of hopelessness. Many years ago Professor Joseph Mbiti had wrongly claimed that Africans did not have any concept of time.
This in turn was quoted throughout the scholarly world and social scientists everywhere thought that the African needed to be re-socialized and equipped with a time consciousness.
This now worn out thinking, which still remains in some schorlarly books fortunately, has been revoked by its author, who now claims that he used faulty data in making his claims. It is sad that for decades there was a generation that believed and explained everything negative about Africans being correlated to the time consciousness.
Without labouring the point further it is now a fact that actually the oldest societies that are known to have invented time and calendar as it were are from Africa. This is mainly from Egypt and from our very own Borana in the Northern districts of Kenya. For instance, the Borana had a calendar a century prior to the one prepared by Julius Caesar.
Our perception of what time is is projected in how we use and manage our time, lifestyle and the priorities that are part of our lives.
Normally the young children seem to have an unconscious realization of the non-limits of time. To them as long as the day has light and they are not sleepy it is endless. As they grow older for some reasons in their youth they seem to believe strongly that time belongs to them and that they can control or manipulate it. No wonder the recklessness that goes with the youth. Everyday in their misconception of time they seem to forget who they really are and how mortal they are. It is in this self-delusion that the marketers have sold to them the illusion of the forever youth.
In verses 14 of our text reads, “And God said, let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night and let them be for signs, and seasons, and for days and years.”
What the verse is saying is essentially what the writer of the book of Ecclesiastes well captions in his philosophical treatise on reality as it were, that is, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” (Ecc. 3:1).
Part of our problem as human beings is the nascent need for validation through comparisons that are endless and most often needless. In the end we end up reasoning as the Ecclesiastes writers does when he says, “Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?” For it is not wise to ask such questions.” (Ecc. 7:10)
So who controls or manages your time and mine? Did you know that we all have a twenty-four hours day, whether you are rich, poor, wise or a fool? Now is all that the Ancient of Days has given you and I, will you waste it fighting, whining or joyous and sharing with others?
Albert Einstein one the greatest scientist of all time is credited for elaborating on the issue of time and space thus in his grand relativity theorem he talks about parallel universes, he even talks on the possibility of stopping time and even traveling between parallel universes. Albert Einstein sounds fictitious and even dreamy, but Paul the apostle seems in his lifetime to have done so, “he boasts of visiting the third heaven.”
H. G. Wells one of the earliest science fiction writers of our times, talks about a time machine that is able to travel back and forth. Since then others have come and shown the possibility of changing the past or even the future as it were if only we are able to travel to our past or our future.
To the followers of the Nazarene those are not just science fictions and neither are they just wishful thinking. One can actual change his or her past once one is aligned to the Creator of time, the Ancient of Days. Ones failures, mistakes can be changed through the forgiveness that comes by grace. One can actually become a new creature, the old is gone and behold everything is new as the Living Scripts continue to exhort us.
Paul the great disciple of our lord and a prolific writer too, says, “we are in the heavenly places with Christ.” Essentially exist in parallel universes without confusion and without any schizophrenic maladjustment. After all, human beings have the dual material and non-material substances that allow them to exist both in time and beyond time.
Our Lord tells the Pharisees “When evening comes you say ‘it will be fair weather, for the sky is red’, and in the morning, “Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.” (Matt. 16:2-3).
The tragedy of our days is that, we have been blinded by the ‘urgency of now’ or rather what is correctly referred to as the ‘Tyranny of the urgent.’ Mundane, non-important issues pre-occupy us. What we will eat, drink or wear drive us to the precipice of destruction.
The claim by the ancient of days “I AM who I AM,” are claims of a being who is beyond time and who controls time. It is a claim about the forever now. No wonder the Psalmist reverently says, “My times are in your hands;.” Mordecai the erstwhile political whiz confronts Esther the Queen with the question “Who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?
Probably you are wondering, how do I know the right time or my time? The writer of the Living Scripts says, ‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,’ and continues to say, “ . . .the wise heart will know the proper time.” (Ecc. 8:5).
It is time that we synchronize our time and schedules according to the One who created time. Then we will be able to responsively say without a fatalistic mindset, that truly may his will be done.
Put your treasures where thieves or moths cannot destroy, one can save, keep and even invest time. Those who know how to go about it are those who realize how temporal life is and have thus invested in eternal timeless principles. Of course the major and probably the only principle is one; Love. The greatest of all is love.
Hope and faith will cease; love that we invest in others will remain. It is the only component that is not limited to time and space. Are you in love today? Go for it, it is the only thing that is. Of course it starts at, “Love the Lord God with all you heart.” (Interactive: firstname.lastname@example.org).
