God tells us in His Word through the Apostle Paul, “The wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6: 23) Jesus warns about the harm we bring upon ourselves from sinning when He tells one man He healed, “Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” (John 5:14)
I’ve been convicted that we are bringing harm upon ourselves by committing trivial sins we may not even be aware of!
Do you or have you done any of the following?
Exceed the speed limit.
Come to a rolling stop at a stop sign.
Jaywalk.
Take your seat belt off for just a moment to check on your child in the back seat.
Give a family member or friend just one of your prescription pain pills.
Let your dog run freely at the park when the law requires you to have it on a leash.
Earn “under the table” wages and don’t report them on your tax return.
I imagine you can think of other seemingly trivial sins as well. The ones I listed above are things I’ve heard others tell me in casual conversation or have observed them do. Some of these I am guilty of myself as well. However, I’ve been convicted it's important to God that I obey all laws since they have been established for mine and others' own good. I realize when I break a law I’m not only disobeying the government but I’m disobeying God as well. When I break a law, even if I’m not caught by law enforcement, God still sees me and holds me accountable for breaking it.
I am now striving to be obedient to all laws including traffic laws. I have asked God for forgiveness for all the laws I have broken. I sure am forever grateful for His promise to forgive us without penalty. He tells us through the Apostle John, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9) I’m further convicted by God to make restitution where I can for laws I have broken to further enable me to restore a correct relationship with the state and with God.
I firmly believe in Scripture’s promise, “…Be careful to obey so that it may go well with you.” (Deuteronomy 6:3) Therefore, I know I will have a more blessed life if I am more careful to obey every law. Perhaps, I will have a lengthier life here on earth since I am ending my earthly life less quickly by sinning less.
I hope and pray you too will strive to obey all laws. It will lead to a more blessed life for you too here on earth and perhaps a lengthier one too!
Love and prayers,
