Religious Awareness Test

Do you ever get the feeling that you are out of place at church or some other institutionalized religious gathering? Does it bother you when you notice others being readily accepted by a religious group when you have to struggle to just fit in? Have you been unable to achieve recognition as a truly spiritual person? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be suffering from poor religious awareness.

As in every social setting, religious groups have certain "do's-and-don'ts" which dictate acceptance. Those who are aware of these "religious-rules" easily succeed in feeling settled and accepted. Those who have trouble with religious awareness often feel uncomfortable and unaccepted. For the purpose of this article, the ability to recognize "religious-rules" will be referred to as the "Aptitude for Religious Awareness" (ARA).

The first step in overcoming a low ARA is to become aware of the problem. Therefore, I have developed a series of tests called the Religious Awareness Tests (RAT). There are presently three RAT's: a Catholic RAT, a Protestant RAT, and a Jewish RAT. If taken honestly, the RAT will help a person determine his or her level of ARA.

I have placed below the Protestant version of the RAT. It contains ten multiple-choice questions. If you choose to take the test, please answer all ten questions on a separate piece of paper. Then, if you would like to be graded, post your answers at the end of this article. All ARA scores will be posted upon request.

1) Many churches have an official "greeter" at the door in order to
A) answer questions regarding the church service.

B) let visitors know that they are welcome.

C) make it seem as if someone actually cares

2) The pastor of the church strongly encourages members to be at every church service because
A) he has an ego and wants large crowds to hear him speak.

B) the greater the crowd, the larger the offering will be.

C) (both of the above)

3) Spirituality is measured by
A) one's devotion to God.

B) one's love for his or her fellow man.

C) the bumper stickers on one's car.

4) Churches that list evangelism and outreach as vital components of its mission statement devote the majority of the church budget to
A) missions.

B) evangelism.

C) a new sound system and carpet for the sanctuary.

5) Pastors believe that everyone falls under one of two main theological categories. Everyone must be either
A) a liberal or a conservative.

B) a Calvinist or an Arminian.

C) in total agreement with the pastor or a heretic.

6) When the pastor says that he will be leaving because God has called him to another ministry, it means that
A) he has spent long hours of agonizing prayer seeking God's will.

B) he has received a supernatural message of guidance from God.

C) he has been offered more money someplace else.

7) When you are asked to volunteer for something that you know you are not going to do, you should say
A) "No."

B) "I am sorry, but I will not be able to do that."

C) "I would love to do that, but let me pray about it before I make a final decision." (Then avoid the person who asked you until he or she finds another volunteer.)

8) The money you place in the offering should be considered
A) a freewill donation given cheerfully.

B) a small portion of God's money that you are giving back to Him as a token of your devotion.

C) a payment for services and privileges you fully expect to receive from the church and its staff.

9) If you read in the bulletin that next Sunday's worship service will feature a famous evangelist preaching a sermon titled "Considering Others Better Than Yourself," you should
A) pray that God would prepare your heart to receive the message.

B) call your friends and family and invite them to the service.

C) begin making plans to arrive ahead of everyone else in order to get the best parking space and the best seat in the church.

10) If you pass by homeless people on the way to church, you should
A) stop and help them as much as possible even though it will make you late for church.

B) bring them to church with you.

C) find another route to church.

This concludes the Protestant version of the RAT. The Catholic and Jewish versions are available for a small donation of $150.00 each. The following is a sample question from the Catholic RAT.

7) Why don't Protestants pray to the saints the same way Catholics do?
A) They believe it goes against the teachings of the Bible.

B) They would rather pray directly to God.

C) Because all the saints are Catholic. (There are no protestant saints.)

Thank you for your participation. As mentioned earlier, post your answers at the end of this article if you would like to be graded. All ARA scores will be posted upon request.
