Vanity

Invades the thoughts, of modern age,
Justifying every act, that is engaged.
Unknown to many, the truth of moral cause,
No matter what the deed, they do not pause.

The sensual pleasures, always are employed,
Then painted gray, replacing truth with joy.
Dulled their sense, while walking toward the flame,
Shield their ears from words that they disdain.

Wild abuse of gifts misused by men,
The beastly natures loosed in mortal sins.
The strongest virtues cast beside the way,
Unnatural pleasures rising up to stay.

It’s not one part of life, where this has bloomed,
But every part of life is now consumed.
Unfit principles in growing numbers till,
They trample values, while their lust is filled.

Dispersed are thoughts of recompense for debts,
Their tuneless chord is played without regret.
They sport the thoughts that every man is God,
Ignore the prospect of the chastening rod.

They lean upon beliefs with hollow words,
And boast that absolutes are just absurd.
Vulgarity fills the streams with mad abuse,
And counsel from the wise is just refused.

They pipe deceptive notes to young and old,
Haply mock the straight and narrow road.
Pleased to kill established social laws,
Leading men to death beyond its walls.

Deceptive lies are spread by many lips,
Esteem the laws of nature as just myths.
Sedated by their passion for their deeds,
Sowing for their future rotted seeds.

Tawdry explanations for their ways,
The truth is hidden, while a lies displayed.
Many purchase here without a thought,
A growing bill of problems, they have bought.

Society must accept the side effects,
The problem is that all will pay this debt.
They look for answers searching in the dark,
Although we know the answer, is where the problem starts.

It’s not for me to say who’s wrong or right,
For God will judge the darkness from the light.
But judge He will, so careful you should be,
For once the sentenced passed; there will be no reprieve.

They lean upon beliefs with hollow words,
And boast that absolutes are just absurd--William, this caught my attention especially, though all was embraced in your poem. The instructor of my Sociology class in College told us there are no absolutes. There was no way I could swallow that pill. I read last year he had died, and I know he has found out for sure there are absolutes. I just hope he found this out before his death. He had many honors and rewards given to him on earth. I pray he didn't miss out on Heaven's rewards. Thank you for your stand on the reality of absolutes. Keep up your excellent writing. Thomas
