ACT I

(Evangelism themed Music)

EXT - CITY CENTER - DAY

Two men and a woman are center stage talking excitedly when another woman approaches from stage left. She begins talking as though she is out of breath.

WOMAN OF SAMARIA
(Breathlessly)
You've got to come see this man. You've just got to come.

ZACCHEUS
Settle down. Take a breath. What are you talking about?

WOMAN OF SAMARIA
I'm talking about this man I met at Jacob's well. He told me all the things I ever did. Maybe not everything. He's got to be the Christ, don't you think?

MAN FROM THE COUNTRY OF THE GADARENES
Okay, so he told you all about yourself. He could have heard it from your friends. Or your enemies! How does his telling you about yourself make him the Christ?

WOMAN OF CANAAN
I agree, he could have heard about you from anyone. You know how gossip spreads. What makes you think he's the Christ?

WOMAN OF SAMARIA
It wasn't so much what he told me about the things I did; you know, my sin. It was how he looked into my heart with eyes of compassion. You see the man I'm living with is not my husband. Somehow he got me to admit that without ever accusing me. The next thing you know, I'm drawn in by his wisdom. I find myself desiring to really know the God of our fathers. He told me how to become a true worshipper. He helped me to see that these mountains are insignificant...
(Gestures as though pointing into the distance)
...and the temple in Jerusalem doesn't mean anything if my heart and my ways aren't righteous. Besides, here I am talking, telling you about Him. Who but Christ could cause me to overcome my guilt and shame?

ZACCHAEUS
Guilt. I know what you mean by guilt. I also know what you mean by it being taken away by just one encounter. Sounds like you met the same person I did. You must be talking about Jesus.

WOMAN OF SAMARIA
I am.

ZACCHAEUS
If it were anyone but Jesus, I wouldn't believe you. I can tell by your speech, youíre a Samaritan. Ordinarily, Jews donít talk to Samaritans. But, Jesus is not ordinary. Iím a tax collector. Like a lot of politicians, Iíve done some shady things in my time. I felt most guilty about how I used to cheat people out of their money. Then I met Jesus. You see how short I am?

(Stands next to the man from the country of the the Gaderenes and measures himself against him.)

I climbed up in a tree so I could see him coming down the road. He didnít even look up. He just seemed to know where I was. He called me down out of that tree and came to my house for dinner. Since I spent time with him, I've abandoned deceit and other fraudulent behavior on my job. I donít steal from my job and I donít cheat people anymore. Iím doing my work as unto God now.

WOMAN OF CANAAN
Hey, let me get a word in. Racial discrimination came toppling down like a house of cards She thought people were trying to hurt her and every now and then her anger was so bad, I and everyone else could see she was being controlled by devils. So I went Jesus. At first he ignored me; then he said he could only help Jews; but I kept pleading. Finally, He healed my daughter. He commended me for stepping out of the box of tradition with my faith.

WOMAN OF SAMARIA
He definitely knows how to make you get over tradition.

WOMAN OF CANAAN
Iím not as impressed him smashing tradition as I am with him turning my hopeless situation around.

MAN FROM THE COUNTRY OF THE GADERENES
Let me tell you about turning a hopeless situation around. I was out of my mind. Literally. The devil had me so bound that a legion of demons controlled my mind and dictated what I did. I was running around without any clothes on and living in a cemetery. Not even chains could hold me. Everybody was scared of me. It still makes me sad to know that even my own family was afraid. I was helpless and hopeless to do anything about my condition on my own, but then Jesus came along. He cast the demons out of me. Next thing you know, I found myself clothed and in my right mind. When he gave me my mind back, he sent me home and restored my family. He called restored everything taken away by my mental illness, my homelessness and my criminal behavior when he cast those demons out of me.
(Addresses the Woman of Samaria)
Yes, he is the Christ.

(MUSIC Ė selected Contemporary Christian song)

Music fades.

INT - HOUSE OF SIMON THE LEPER - DAY

(Music - healing centered song)

(MARY OF MAGDALA makes her way slowly to the platform where Jesus is waiting. Mary of Magdala anoints him with perfume from her broken open alabaster box, lets her tears drop on his feet and wipes them with her hair.)

DISCIPLE 1
Why this waste? This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.

JESUS
Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.

(MUSIC - REPRISE - healing centered song)

(MUSIC - Some song about the last supper)

Music fades

INT - UPPERROOM - EVENING The Last Supper (Luke 22:14-38)

JESUS
I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

(Jesus serves communion explaining the significance of each element as He does.)

DISCIPLE 1
I will be greatest in the kingdom because I have a lot of talents.

DISCIPLE 2
I will be greatest because I've done more.

DISCIPLE 3
No me, because I spent more time with the Master.

JESUS
The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. You are those who have stood by me in my trials. And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my father conferred one on me, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.

PETER
Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.

JESUS
I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.

REPRISE SONG ABOUT LAST SUPPER.

(MUSIC - "Were you there when they crucified my Lord" - TRADITIONAL)

Music fades.

ACT II

EXT - ROAD TO GOLGATHA - DAY

Flood lights, blue gel

(ROMAN SOLDIER grabs a man and lays a cross on him.)

(Sound of weeping and moaning. A funeral dirge plays in the background.)

JESUS
Daughters of Jerusalem do not weep for me: weep for yourselves and for your children.

(MUSIC - song about why Jesus went to the cross)

Music fades.

JESUS
(Quotes all seven sayings from the cross).

(MUSIC - "Mary did you know" by Mark Lowry)''

MARY THE MOTHER OF JESUS
My child served the Sovereign, God, Most High and He pleased Him. As He went about doing good, my heart overflowed with joy and my love for the God of our fathers grew all the more. Throughout his 33 short years, the miracle of his birth and the wonder of how he was protected from slaughter helped me to keep things in perspective. Oh, it hurt me but I could deal with a mother's natural urge to shelter him from the piercing accusations and fierce rejection of others because I knew these things must come. So when he suffered under Pontus Pilate, I was not overwhelmed by my grief because I knew he had the highest call of all.

All the things I pondered in my heart when the angel first announced God's plan for Jesus came flooding back to my memory when I stood at the foot of that old rugged cross. As the blood flowed from his side, over the thunder of my own sobs, I could hear the command of the Law, "without the shedding of the blood of a lamb without spot or blemish, there is no remission of sin." My little lamb had grown up to be the Lamb of God.

(MUSIC - traditional hymn)

Music fades.

Flood lights - bright white

EXT - TOMB WITH STONE ROLLED AWAY - DAY

ANGEL
Why are you looking for the living among the dead?

(MUSIC - a song about Jesus being alive, risen from the dead)

OFF STAGE VOICE OF JESUS

(MUSIC Ė A traditional Easter Song )
