One will say, “I belong to the Lord” another will call himself by the name of Jacob: still another will write on his hand, “The Lord’s”……. Isaiah 44:5 NIV
“Still another will write on his hand,’The Lord’s’.” Can you picture that? Someone writing on his hand. Why would he do that?
First and foremost, the writer wants to show that he no longer considers himself a free man, nor does he hide that fact. It is written on his person for all to see; "The Lord's", he writes. Furthermore, this “brand” as it were, is not placed there by someone else. It is the writer himself who engraves the words onto his own hand.
Does he do this of His own initiative? I don’t think so. In Isaiah 44:1 God speaks to Israel, “Whom I have chosen.” God chose us “while we were yet sinners”, nevertheless, this individual heeds God’s call and responds with zeal.
Don’t you just long to submit as did this writer? To proclaim to all that you belong to God? To see that reminder each time your hands are used in His service?
Then everything you do becomes a reflection of your Owner. As you belong to Him, so does all that you possess belong to Him. Not your talent, His. Not your thoughts, His. You become the servant carrying out the will of the Master.
Today, I boldly wrote on my hand, “The Lord’s”, both physically and metaphorically. How simple. What a wonderful way to call all these things to mind!
Get out your pens, you called of God. Go ahead. Write it. You will never do anything more profound!
