The Three Crosses
On Rembrandt Etching Crucifixion
from NONE - The Hours of the Cross
Ushered into shape, a market lighted,
Exploited with punctilious details
Etched on the complex panel of a crowded
Harmony.
Find me the place
Whereto I may address my pious notes,
And secure in its penumbra dark
A precious measure of my enthrallment.
Accoutred to the shafts of light, the rainy thorns
Yield the splinters of thought and scrutiny,
Harbor a grove for a less private death;
Shade slopes downhill, sideway to seek lightness
From the shelter of its chiaroscuro -
Preludes as apocalyptic as ink
Engraved on its surface an incised pathos.
