“My God! His body is burning.” Golda takes away her hand from her husband’s forehead. “It’s already been three days since he is afflicted with fever. I don’t have money! What shall I do my Lord? In silence she spoke these words. She dipped cotton in cool water and placed it on her husband’s forehead. “Don’t worry! You will be alright. Trust in the Lord.” Golda’s virtues are priceless pearls. Her words are so powerful that they work wonders even for a person who is without any hope.
Golda, a school drop out, married a very strong willed man named Israel, a famous merchant once upon a time. Golda and her husband are God-fearing people who had a humble and contrite spirit. During the days of prosperity, seven servant maids served her. They had a horse driven cart that was envied by everyone and many acres of farmlands. When adversity struck them everything vanished. Even her dear sisters Denny and Cindy who became rich landowners maintained their distance with her. Wealth became their new God.
On the other hand, money became the source of all evils. Denny and Cindy were knitted together so much so that they always planned evil against the poor people. Their husband joined hands, set about hunting endangered species and also indulged in illegal brewing of ale (cheap arrack).
Golda strolled towards the entrance. “Let me check if there is someone who will send a word to my younger sister Denny.” Moving with this thought in mind, which she disliked, her steps hastened. Alexander Graham Bell was still in the process of inventing the telephone at that time.
Suzanna rushed inside before Golda could reach the door. They met in the middle of the pathway. “Hello! How do you do?”
“I am fine Suzy! It’s my husband who is unwell. I did not have even a wink of sleep for the past three days.”
“Well Golda! I have brought some bad news for you. Your sister Denny’s husband as well as Cindy’s husband are seriously ill. Today they are being taken in the horse cart to St. Luke’s hospital at Nazareth.”
“Is that so? What happened? Who gave you this information?” Being greatly perturbed Golda asked these questions at a stretch and then gasped for breath.
“I had been to Cindy’s barn for removing hay. Denny’s horse cart stood in the entrance. At first I thought they were planning for a hunting trip. Later on the servant maid told me this information.”
Golda turned and started walking along with Suzy towards the living room. Golda prepared some gruel. She gave this to her dear husband. His body was burning like a furnace. “I don’t want it. This gruel tastes bitter.” In a very feeble voice he refused. However, she cajoled him like a child and forced some through his throat. Then she gave a major part of it to Suzy and also gulped a portion of it. Suzy helped her with some of the household chores and left home around half past one.
Golda did not know what to do. “I thought of getting help from my sister Denny but now neither she nor Cindy can help me. What shall I do? Then she entered her private room and knelt down. “My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” With this thought she began to pray. “Lord! I am unworthy to come to Thy throne of grace. I trust no man who has breath in his nostrils. I solely depend on You for granting me Your goodness. You are aware of my plight. Please touch my husband who is very sick. Bring me out of this dreadful situation. There is none to help me besides You. Lord please perform a miracle for me. May Your grace and mercy follow me always.” Like Hannah she poured her heart. A great calmness came over and a divine peace filled her soul.
Once again she walked towards the entrance and stood leaning on the pole. Suddenly she fell into a trance. On the road, two angels stood conversing. They held a book in their hands. “What are you doing here?” Quite perplexed on seeing such supernatural cherubic characters on earth Golda asked them with curiosity.
“We are angels sent from heaven to check the length of days of every man on earth.” Casually they responded.
“Is that so? Will you please do me a favour?” With much trembling she asked them.
“My sister Denny’s husband and Cindy’s husband are unwell. Could you please tell me the length of their days.”
The angels turned the pages of the book they had in hand. They gestured as if to say “No. Very short.” Once again they turned and signaled “A few more years.” Golda was filled with grief.
“If you are not angry with me, I wish another favour from you.” Golda filled with fear asked the angels.
“They smiled at her.”
Golda overcame the fear that tormented her. “My husband is also very sick.” She paused. “Could you please let me know the length of his days?” With much hesitation she completed the question.
“Don’t be worried woman. Your husband will live! For a very long time.”
"The Lord dwells in the high and holy place, with those who have a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”
Golda came to her senses from the trance. As the angels of God foretold, Denny’s husband passed away three days after this incident and Cindy’s husband lived for three years after. However, Golda husband lived for ninety-eight years.
For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).
