“Come, follow me’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men. “—Mark 1:17 (NIV)
Wow, what an inspiring thought. What is more inspiring is that this is exactly what Jesus is asking of us today. He is asking us to follow him.
I think about what it really means to be a “fisher of men.” It means to be the kind of Christian that attracts people to God. How do we do that? We follow Jesus’ example.
A leader can say all the inspiring words. A leader can have positions and titles that say they are a leader, but every real leader knows that effective leaders lead by example. We must lead by example as Christians.
Of course that is a sort of pat answer that we expect from leadership consultants. I can tell you that there is nothing simple about leading by example; it is hard work. There are always times that you would rather not do something.
There will be times that you are pushed out of you comfort zone. I guess that is what Jesus wants us to do when he asks us to follow him. He wants to push us out of our comfort zone when we become a “fisher of men.”
Now that is leadership. The best kind of leadership is inspirational leadership that keeps on giving and can change the world.
Changing the world is what it is all about. All it takes is just one step in the right direction. One step in the right direction is volunteering in your community or church. That is leadership by example of the best kind.
