When you were young, do you remember singing, "Give me oil,
oil, oil in my lamp -- oil in my lamp I pray?" So I ask you, how is
your oil level? You regularly fill your car with gas, but do you
replenish the oil of the Holy Spirit in your soul? The oil of the
Holy Spirit is what keeps the Christian's machinery working
effectively. How do you replenish it?
The Christian's connection to/from God is like an electrical
circuit -- it needs to be a complete circuit free from
contamination. God's power flows to us from the Holy Spirit,
then through us, and is returned to the Father through Jesus
Christ. The only thing that impedes that flow of power from God
is the contamination of our sin. Sounds too simple? No, it is that
simple. You replenish the oil of the Holy Spirit by keeping your
pipeline free of contamination. That requires a concentrated
effort.
Heb. 1:9 (nlt), "You love what is right and hate what is wrong
(that's keeping the pipeline clean), therefore God, your God, has
anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than anyone
else." That was written to specific people, but it indicates what
we need to do to keep the oil flowing.
