God, the Father, has had to discipline his children from the beginning. In Genesis 2:15 God commanded His child, Adam, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”. Adam knew and understood (for the most part) the command he was given. When Adam allowed his wife to eat from the one tree he was told not to, sin entered the world, and man went from being eternal, to dying, death, evil, illness, pain and suffering had entered the world.
God had the power to stop it, He had the power to keep Adam and his wife from breaking His command, but just like ever father, God had to let His children chose to do right or wrong. God had not only given the command, but also the consequences if that command was broken. God does not go back on His Word and had to follow through.
His children from now on would face certain death, illness, and tragedy. God is Love and He is a forgiving God, even as He disciplined Adam, He gave a covenant, or promise of redemption: (Speaking to the serpent) “I will put Enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will crush your head, and you will strike
His heel.” {Genesis 3:15}.
Let us back up a moment if we could, and put our selves in the Lord’s parent role in this situation. He gave the command, Adam broke it (Adams wife, was the deceived one, but remember she was not created until after the command was given to Adam, Adam was accountable for his wife), the consequence was given and it was harsh. Adam knew and understood the command and the consequence for breaking that command, yet when faced with temptation, (and seeing that his wife did not die physically in front of him) {Genesis 3:6-7}, Adam made the wrong choice.
We have all been there, some of us from both sides. As children, we have deliberately disobeyed our parents even when we knew the consequences of our actions. It does not matter if they or anybody else agrees with those consequences, once they have been set there they stay. I offer an example of this from our adult world view: Most of us speed, some occasionally, some habitually; we know it is against the law, but we do it anyway. We also do this knowing the consequences, i.e., speeding tickets, fines, court dates, increased insurance rates, or even have your liscence takien away. Try telling a police officer that it isn't fair to get a ticket, after all you don't speed all the time, and you weren't speeding that bad. It simply won't work, the fact is when you are guilty you are guilty, the punishment has been set, and the choice is ours.
Can you feel God’s heart break? Put yourself in His Fatherly position, not His role as God, not His role as Creator, His role as Father. Seriously pause and meditate on this for a moment, imagine how God must have felt when it came time to discipline His children with the ultimate punishment...-DEATH.
Yet, because of His love and forgiveness, He offers Hope. God Himself would make a sacrificial offering on Adams behalf, the ultimate sacrifice…His One and Only Son {John 3:16}. God shows us that even after dolling out some severe punishment, we need to show grace, love and forgiveness to our children.
As we move forward, I pray our eyes our open to the journey set before us. I do not know the direction the Lord will be taking us on this journey, but I believe our next destination will be visiting the Israelites.
