It’s FUN when they are newborn
Rejoice in coo’s and aawwws.
Even when their diaper’s full
You get all applause.
Then, they begin to toddle
He’s taken his first step!
Your chest puffs up
You take your stance
More accolades accept.
The first sign you encounter
Of pending doom occurs.
He’s gotten into trouble
Hmmm…that cat used to purrrr.
Adjust, move on, your fists, unfurl
She’s still a little saint.
Look at all those pretty curls!
Is that the kitchen paint?
Your pride’s in tact, incredible
What a fate you’ve cheated.
YOUR kids aren’t like all the rest
YOU won’t be defeated.
The time will come, the nest does crumble
Friends and parents drone.
Enjoy them now, before that day
When they just smile and drive away
And you are left alone.
“Pick up those clothes, clean out that cage!”
Your job’s to make them mind.
What’s the reason for his rage?
Someone’s been unkind.
The lessons learned, the books now closed
I’m sure you understand.
The time has come to cut them loose
You must release her hand.
Mom, don’t cry. Dad don’t worry
There’s still time I bet.
To grab that ring of total bliss
Your job’s not finished yet.
Front porch talks and fishing trips
Are privileges to treasure.
There’s still “time” for everything
So put away that measure.
One thing’s fact, you know for sure
Who’s hands they’ll be in now.
He’s the one who made them yours
And He has shown you HOW.

Had to let out a pretty long exhale...... "The time will come, the nest does crumble" That, it does. And for some of us, it seems to come far, far too soon or due to (or in the middle of) some traumatic circumstance. Learning how to let go... I've accomplished a lot of seemingly difficult things in my life. But I can't think of a single one that closely compares.
