From birth I have relied on you;
you brought me forth from my mother's womb.
I will ever praise you.
Psalm 71:6 NIV
The other day my daughter came running into my office, grabbed my hand, licked my finger, stared at my finger for a second and then jumped with joy.
“Mom, you and I are both whorls!”
I wasn’t certain I knew how to respond to that. Good thing is I didn’t have to ask questions as Kayleigh was armed with her “First Body Book”* which is a kid-size anatomy and physiology book. She pointed to the various examples of fingerprints: the arch, the loop and the whorl.
She then licked her finger (apparently the spit has properties that allow the design to shine better) and said, “See, I am a whorl, too.”
I have to give it to her; I never expected that conversation with her.
So often with God we are surprised when he gives us a “whorl” and says “Hey you, Mom, I want to show you something special.” Our lives are so often on autopilot that we miss the deeper significance of Motherhood.
It is then that we become licked. Beat. Depressed. Missing the greatest impressions that our children should be to our lives. We miss the opportunity to impress upon them the higher truths of God that we know but frequently take for granted.
From birth, God designed us unique, special and one of a kind. That is something to give Him praise. On the other hand, if you are like my daughter and me, you could just put two thumbs up and give God a whorl.
