“‘With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”
--Matthew 19:26b
As I read this passage, I more often recall Jesus’ teaching that faith can move mountains more than Paul’s admonitions about day to day interactions with others. We know that God has boundless power to make miracles, that at His command Moses parted the Red Sea and King Nebuchadnezzar’s lions refrained from consuming Daniel, but it’s difficult to transfer this idea into everyday life.
The epistles in particular speak about the grace we must show to others. In Colossians 4:6, Paul writes, “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how to answer each one.” The words yield a beautiful, yet seemingly impossible picture of a Christian imitating Christ, painting a character fit for Bible stories, but apparently out of place in our present world. As I ponder the idea, questions pervade my mind (How will I know what to say in a given situation? What if I sound weird? How will others react if everything I say is about God? Should everything I say pertain to God?), and I am at a loss for answers.
Yet Jesus knows our hearts, and spoke in John 15:5, “’I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.’” On our own, we fail; it is impossible to testify of God without Him speaking through us. However, God is faithful, and dwells within all believers. If we tremble before Him, what else can we fear? “If God is with us, who can be against us?”
Therefore, we need never feel embarrassed or anxious regarding our words—they are not our own, but God’s. If God has power to work great wonders, how much more will He be able to work small ones in our own lives! Our faith will at times falter, leaving a streak of sin in its path, for we ourselves are evil. Yet through God’s endless grace, we are His children, and He is with us through everything. All we must do is trust.
