Look at your neighbor and say, ďSomething is following meĒ. If you would read the book of Psalm, which was written by King David, you will find that David went through a lot. He suffered much, but had great victory in all of his battles, whether spiritual or physical. David was a man after Godís own heart, and he was highly favored by God. Even in the midst of his fall, he was blessed. The Book of Psalm is one of inspiration and encouragement, but there is something about the 23rd Psalm, especially that 6th verse: ďSurely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my lifeĒ. I believe
David had gotten to the point that he knew that even the things that didnít feel so good or didnít look so good were still good because God was continuously working all things out for his good. Has anybody gotten there yet? Have you reached the point where you can say, ďEven if I donít get the house; even if I donít get the car; even if I donít get the job; even if I donít get the husband; even if I donít get the wife, God is still good.Ē If you ever get to that point, you can say as David said, ďSurely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.Ē David is simply saying, ďAlthough it doesnít look good or feel good; and although the bad is what I deserve, God will work it out just for me.Ē
David has fought against lions and bears; He gained victory over Goliath; Saul tried to kill him, and his son, Absalom even came against him. But, in every battle, David was the victor because the spirit of the Lord was upon him and goodness and mercy were commanded to keep him at all times. When Saul was in pursuit of David, David hid out in a cave, and after he entered the cave, goodness and mercy used a spider to web up the entrance of the cave to make it appear as if no one had entered the cave in a while. Saul entered the cave, and went to sleep. While Saul was asleep, King David came out of hiding and clipped a corner of Saulís robe off to show him that he had been given the opportunity to kill him, but he didnít. Look at the table of victory that the Lord prepared before Davidís enemy.
Goodness and mercy follows us when we deserve to be left in the wilderness for the enemy to destroy us and take our very lives. Iím sure youíve been in the car riding along, not really paying attention, just driving, and something happens that is sure to cause a wreck, but for some reason, you didnít hit that car that came out of nowhere, or the car didnít hit you that ran the red light or stop sign. Why? Why wasnít your very life taken at that moment? Look at somebody and say, ďSomething is following me.Ē Goodness and mercy were following you and they saw it coming when you didnít; and, they faithfully pushed you out of harms way, but they want you to know that they are there so they give you the opportunity to see what could have happened had they not been following you. Have you ever plotted and planned to do something, and when it comes down to the wire, your plans are shattered? Take for example: Youíve planned to go on a trip for months, and youíve purchased your airline ticket, bought that new outfit, perfect for the occasion, requested time off work, and informed everybody that you were going out of town on this particular day, but all of a sudden something happens like you get sick, or your boss tells you that he canít let you off. It feels bad right then, but you hear on the news that the plane that you were scheduled to fly on blew up. Look at the person next to you and say, ďSomething is following me.Ē Have you ever plotted to do wrong? Be honest; I know that Iím not the only one. Has anyone ever plotted and planned to do something that was just completely against what is right; and, something happens to stop you from going through with the plans. You are disappointed, but you later find out that something really bad would have happened if you had gone through with those plans. Something was following you. Do I have any witness that know that you deserve much worse than you have, but because of goodness and mercy, you have that fine home, that nice car, those fancy clothes, those wonderful children, that good job, that good husband or that good wife? Do I have any witnesses that know that you should have been and could have been dead when you were drinking and driving, when you were speeding down the highway. Do I have any witnesses that can acknowledge that ďI should have AIDS after all of the times Iíve fornicated and committed adultery? Do I have any witnesses that can admit that I should have cancer after all of the cigarettes Iíve smoked; but, goodness and mercy saved me when I didnít want to save myself.
Goodness and mercy kept me when I didnít know how to keep myself. Even when things feel and look bad, itís still good; goodness is still on his job. Even when we deserve to fail, to be hurt and disappointed, mercy is on the job providing us with what we need, not what we truly deserve. Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. Goodness and mercy follows me when Iím right and when Iím wrong. Goodness and mercy follows me when Iím happy and when Iím sad. Goodness and mercy follows me when I fail and when I succeed. Goodness and mercy shall follow me all of the days of my life.
I donít care what you are going through; I donít care what you have been through; I donít care what you will go through, something is always following you to protect you, to keep you, to lead you, and to guide you. If anybody asks you how I made it through a life of sin without getting eternal damnation, tell them that ďSomething is following me.Ē If anybody asks you how I made it through jail, being lied on, talked about, pushed down and kicked around without losing my very mind, tell them that something is following me. If anybody asks you how I made it through all of those bad relationships and Iím still able to love with the love of Christ, tell them that something is following me. If anybody asks you why Satan canít stop me no matter how hard he tries, tell them that something is following me. Why didnít that bad relationship make you blow your brains out; something is following you. How did you make it after Mamma died; after Daddy died; something is following you. Why isnít my marriage over after all of the lies, the infidelity, the hurt, the disappointment; something is following me. How did I keep my sanity after losing everything that I had, but my faith; something is following me. Why didnít cancer kill me; something is following me. I should have died in the midst of my sins, but something is following me.
I believe I can hear David saying: ďThe Lord is my keeper, my protector, my provider, my healer, my deliverer, my way maker, and my Savior; there is nothing that I should want for. He keeps me on the path of prosperity and success; He leads me down a path of peace and quietness, even in the when the storms of life are raging. Although I may face trials, tribulations, troubles, disappointments and failures, I will not fear what can happen to me because God is with me. His word comforts me in the midst of troubles. While my enemies watch and wait for me to fall and to fail, He prepares sweet victory for me right before their eyes. He anoints me with His spirit and His power, and it overflows to the point that goodness and mercy follows me every single day of my life, and at the end of this life, I will live with Him in His house forever, and ever, and ever. Amen.
ďSOMETHING IS FOLLOWING YOU (POEM)Ē
When I look back over my life
And consider the much turmoil and strife
That Iíve faced as Iíve come along,
I realize that Iíve never been alone;
For, there was always a way made
Even if my faith was weak when I prayed.
I used to wonder how I made it through
And how I was able to do
All that was required to make it through the storm
And unseen dangers that could have caused great harm;
But, I know that it was goodness and mercy following me
Because God saw my every need and heard my every plea.
He promised that goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
Even in the midst of misery, heartache, turmoil, disappointment, and strife.
So, if anyone asks you how I made through that bad relationship without losing my mind,
Tell them that goodness and mercy was there all of the time.
If anyone asks you why cancer didnít take my very life;
And, why I didnít give up when I was abused and neglected as a wife,
Tell them that goodness and mercy will be with me as long as God sits on the throne;
And, He has promised that they would never leave me alone.
If anyone asks you how can I love my enemies even when Iím abused,
And how I can love those closest to me even when Iím misused,
Tell them ďThou preparest a table of victory before my enemiesĒ,
And for their efforts to hurt me, God has many remedies
That protects me from the hurt and harm they try to cause me in any way;
For, goodness and mercy follows me every day.
If anyone asks you how I made it after losing everything that I own,
Tell them that goodness and mercy never left me alone.
If anyone asks you why Iím not ashamed of the time I spent in jail,
Tell them that goodness and mercy used it as a tool to keep me out of hell.
If anyone asks you why Iím not where I couldíve and shouldíve been,
Tell them that my life doesnít lie in the hands of men.
If anyone asks you why Iím not what, who, and where they thought Iíd be,
Tell them that goodness and mercy is following me;
And, they keep me when I donít even know how to keep myself;
And, they have used me to be a witness to everyone else
That God will never leave of forsake those that He loves;
For, Heís watching over us from the heavens above.
Yes, goodness and mercy is following me all the days of my life,
In good times and bad times, in joy, misery and strife.
So, if you want to know how you made it through,
Take a look at the 23rd Psalm, and youíll find that something is following you.
"Goodness and mercy follows us when we deserve to be left in the wilderness for the enemy to destroy us and take our very lives."
This is very anointed of God and EXACTLY what I needed for today. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me ALL the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
