Two years ago the truth of I Corinthians 14:14 was greatly driven home to me. When we pray in the tongues of the Spirit, our spirit prays, but our understanding is unfruitful. I was visiting a friend in Tennessee and stayed at her home overnight. Next morning, Jan told me something astonishing: “Pat, I was walking past your bedroom and I heard you praying loudly in tongues.” But I let her know I could remember nothing except that I had a sound sleep. I did not remember thinking anything, let alone saying anything while I was asleep!
She said it must have been the Lord praying through me, apart from my own human will. About an hour later she and I, along with her daughter were getting ready to go out for the day. Jan stumbled when she began to go down the porch steps. Just in time she caught herself before she lost control, so she didn’t fall down. She told me it would have been mighty serious if she had fallen, because of health problems she’d suffered. She might have ended up in the hospital instead of going out for a fun day.
This experience reinforced my belief that the soul and the spirit are two separate parts of us. The soul is world-conscious, constantly thinking of mundane things like paying bills, getting groceries, etc. The spirit is God-conscious and can pray with the perfect understanding because we who are joined to the Lord are one spirit (I Cor.6:17). In I Thes. 5:23 Paul expresses his wish that our entire spirit, soul and body be presented faultless before the Lord. Thank God that while we have a soul which is in the process (often painful) of being sanctified, the spirit is already perfected in the sight of God. The Holy Spirit can move upon our spirit to pray in time of need or emergency to meet the need of the hour in just the right way, apart from the imperfect understanding of our struggling soul. He knows the future and what is about to happen, and can head satan off at the pass before the devil hits us with one of his big bombs.
Praise the Lord for his perfect understanding and wonderful watchcare over us all.

Here is another scriptural truth explained simply yet profoundly....I have experienced praying that wakes me up during the night!! What a joy to be reminded that we belong to God, lock stock and barrel, and He delights in His total healing of His children - thank you Patricia!
