One of the greatest parables in the Bible is the story on the Prodigal Son. The story of the youngest of two sons, who becomes discontented with his father and his home and wants to leave and start a life of his own. He asked his father for his inheritance now, he didn't want to wait for his father's death. This was like a slap in the face to his father. It was an insult, but the father gave in and did what he was asked to do. One thing that we need to know about jewish life that extended families lived together in clans. They lived together on the same property. The men did the field work and tending the livestock, while the women and children did the house chores. It took everyone working together to sustain their lives. The Prodigal Son not only insulted his father, but also his clan. If they would find out the son would be taken outside the camp and stoned to death. This would be done publicly to discourage any other young men that might have the same idea about leaving. The Prodigal Son was able to leave home without notice, but eventually the news broke out. Everyone now knew what he had done. If he was ever sighted, then he would be captured and stoned to death. Well we all know what happened when he was in the far country, he wasted and squandered every cent he had on parties and prostitutes. When he was about ready to eat pig slop, he came to his senses. He realized he had had it good at home with his family. So he decided to go back home to his family. Each day his father would watch for his son, hoping that he would see him walking up the driveway. The father wanted to see him first, because he knew the rest of the clan would stone the boy. Finally, one day the father saw his long lost son coming toward home. He was so happy but yet apprehensive because he was afraid that someone would stone him, so he runs out to meet his son. He puts his arms of love and protection around him. The son pleads to be taken back even if he would have to be a lowly servant. But the father restores his son back into his family. The son thought that the grass was greener on the other side, but when he got to the other side the green turned out to be dead grass. Isn't that just how Satan works? He paints a pretty picture of worldly pleasures and desires, then after we partake of those sinful things, the picture becomes ugly. The main lesson we need to know is: Let's not leave home. We need to stay with our Heavenly Father. We don't know how good we have it with Him. Today if you have left home may you come to your senses and realize that you have a loving Father and wants to run out to you and bring you back into the family! Time to go home. Amen.
