With whom can a teen or young adult trust his or her heart? Approximately 75 percent of those raped experience this atrocity at the hands of someone they know. Even worse some of the victims lose their life, and some of their bodies are sometimes never found. Then there are the countless chat rooms available through dating services on the Internet, where unsuspecting youths can spend hours a day in the privacy of their home, and ultimately rendezvous with dangerous predators who prey on innocence. Dating for teens and young adults, then, is serious business. That’s the message I aim to drive home in my recently released novel, “Indiscreetly Yours.”
An ordained minister and former pastor who is currently an evangelist, I know the challenges of trying to raise children who exercise good judgment in the area of dating. As a pastor, I have had my share of talking with parents and teens about this difficult area. Also, my wife and I have six children. Five of them are either teens or young adults. Admittedly, they don’t always make the choices I want them to.
Indiscreetly Yours underscores the importance of exercising sound judgment in the area of dating. Many youths will be able to relate to the main character. She comes up in a good home and attends church regularly, but she has to learn some things about dating the hard and painful way. I wrote the book to provide churches and parents with a resource for their teens and young adults. You see, I believe that a practical understanding of certain biblical principles are essential to exercising sound judgment in the area of dating, and this conviction is reflected in the novel.
The years of dating are indeed painful years for most teens and young adults. As a parent I wish I could shield my children from this pain but I can’t. Dating is a necessary part of growing up. What I can do for my children is encourage them to appreciate the Word of God, which the Lord has given us as a guide for life. The more we make it a part of our life, the less painful and the more wholesome our life will be.
