How I wish I knew Him
I would also know He who sent Him
Then I wouldn't be what I am
A wandering wind that roams
The febrile vacuum of darkness
Empty and hollow
Like the unfathomable abyss
In which my soul
Upon the sombre gale wafts
If only I knew Him
I would know the wisdom He instills
The quiet wisdom that stays mum
In the turbulence of trials
I would know the joy too
Which His gentle spirit alone yields
The joy dulled not by tear
Nor fazed by the world's burgeoning wealth
How I wish I knew Him
Then I would always be a star
In the mire or in the dazzling sky
Suffused by His presence
The most pleasurable of all
His presence which is the strongest strength
The choicest pearl
The finest prize
The sweetest pie
The richest treasure
I would also be untouched by the world
"The Untouchable"
For there would be no pain or gain
Tangible enough
To sober me up from His intoxicating presence
I would be a conqueror
The conqueror of the world
I would be foolish enough to secure my grip on Him
And wise enough to leave my cloak
In the grappling fingers of the world
I would know all things
And need none to tell me what is and what is not
I would also know that the world's all a dream
And reality, the life that I have in Him
If I did really know Him
I would walk a thousand miles on foot
Waving joyful hands at those
Who flit by in chariots of gold
I would bequeath my vineyard
To those who envy me
And sit by the city gate
Smiling happily at them
Reaping from the fruit of my labour
I would enjoy the pleasure of being hated
And shed tears of joy when I'm slapped
Blessing my assailants already poised
To slap my other proffered cheek
I would steal the hunger from the hungry
And the thirst from the thirsty
Relinquishing all my substance
To relieve my neighbour of all his pains
How I wish I knew Him
The pain which he bore
And I also would bear
The pain that fills the heart with pleasure
As it tears the body into unnumbered shreds
The pain that gave Steven so much pleasure
And caused Paul and Silas to sing out in bonds
But now I know Him not
Despite grueling years and seasons of quest
Alas, I really wish I knew Him
