The spreading gospel of Jesus Christ takes our participation and obedience. As we found in part one, Peter had a choice to allow the Lord to use his possession or not. Whenever the Lord places something on the heart of men to do, we can either adhere or ignore it. We expect things from the Lord but sometimes we donít consider the small things He needs from us to carry forth His will and to get us into a "blessable" state. The Lord never forces us into submission but when we seek to please him and give whatever we have for the sake of the gospel Jesus obligates Him self to bless us.
The boat Peter allows Christ to use was a sort of seed. Until we plant something there can be no harvest. And unless we have faith and trust in the things the Lord tells us to do we will hinder the increase that he wants to provide.
The net that was cast forth can represent this good news of Jesus. The fish are symbolic of men that were caught up in the net. As with the various types of fish that were brought into the boat there are various kinds of people that will be drawn into the church. Every one of them is valuable in some way. Just as the Lord did not tell Peter to throw any of the fishes back into the water He will not reject any man from receiving the good news and becoming a part of the body of Christ.
The problem is that we get in the way of the Lord working and moving for HIS glory. We sometimes fail to trust in the commands of the Lord when He says,ĒDo thisĒ. Instead we attempt to put our minds to work and apply our opinion to the situation. ďBut Iíve tried Lord and it didnít work. Or I have been fishing all of my life. May father was a fisherman and all my friends are fishermen so Lord who are you to tell me how to fish?Ē
We get caught up in traditionalism and believe it takes tricks and whooping and great acting ability to minister the gospel. However, the Lord simply taught the truth which is the Word. He sat down and those who had ears to hear Him did so. While there is nothing wrong with having passion for the Word and speaking those things the Lord has given in the way He sanctified each of us respectively to do so. There is balance required to be effective. We must not cater to the mere emotions of men but to his needs according to the will of the Lord. The Word is strong enough and powerful enough to pierce the hearts of men. It can build the broken and renew the minds of those who seek the Lordís truth. The Word is a lamp to our feet and a light unto our path. It reveals those things which were hidden in secret and covers the sins or our past.
At any time Jesus could have chosen to bless Peter and those who traveled on the boats with them with gold or any other form of currency or riches. But He took what these men had and increased it. And we He was done with blessing them naturally He called them to be fishers of men and blessed them with opportunity to store spiritual riches.
What do you have to offer? If it is a boat or a song or your voice I admonish you to give to the Lord for His use and He will bless you in return with more than you expect and provide overflow to bless someone else.
Now letís go fish.
