During the course of this month of November the Anglican and Roman Catholic communions celebrate the lives and witness of saints from every corner of the world including the Caribbean. Have you ever wondered who qualifies to be saint [apart from the rite of passage performed by the Roman Catholic church]? When I checked the dictionary the description of a saint is this: “a holy or very good person”. The bible dictionary says this: “ A member of God’s covenant people…..” and points us to 1 Cor. 1:2, Psalm 106:16, 1st Peter 2:5 as examples.
As I listen to the priest expound on the virtues of sainthood, it occurred to me that we are all called to ‘sainthood’. One only has to look at the biographies of the saints of old to know that they did not all start out as holy or very good persons or even a members of God’s covenant people, I think particularly of St. Augustine. They were ordinary people just like you and me, prone to mistake after mistake, eventually learning from the experience that truly God’s grace is sufficient.
To accept the call to sainthood one needs to recognise and embrace the grace of God as our saviour Jesus did [Luke 2:40]. We need to know that sainthood is for all and exhibited in our daily living as found in [1 Tim. 1:12-13] and surrender to the will of God is essential as it was with Mary, mother of our Lord [Luke 1:38]
I conclude with the collect appointed for the All Saints/AllSouls Sunday & The Saints & Martyrs of the Caribbean as I believe it speaks for us all:
Almighty God, who called Your witnesses from every nation and revealed Your glory in their lives, make us thankful for the example of the Saints and Martyrs of the Caribbean [
the World
], and strengthen us by their fellowship that we, like them, may be faithful in the service of Your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen”
