Encouragement
Okay, most of you know by now I love lighthouses. On our honeymoon my husband surprised me. He deliberately mapped out our three week travel throughout the New England states so we could see the lighthouses along the way. Did you know that God calls us a lighthouse? Alright, maybe not in those particular words, but nevertheless, He refers to Himself as Light. Then He says for us believers not to hide our light under a bushel basket. He is not talking about a candle here, but His Light that shines in us and pierces the darkness.
Have you ever a met a Christian whose light was very dim? You can tell this by their actions, words, deeds and outward devotion to God, or should I say lack of it. Jesus knew that there would be believer’s like this. That is why he said, “Let your light shine before men….”
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
(Matthew 5: 14-16)
I have to admit, I haven’t consistently been a good example of His light shining through me. There have been times in the past when I let my worries and concerns overtake me and in the process hid my light away from others in fear of judgment, not of God, but of men. Where did this lead me? - Into darkness and more deeds of darkness. Sin compounds itself when it has the right breeding ground. When we keep our light hidden and when we keep ourselves out of “The Light”, it is a recipe for death. As I have heard said, “One lie leads to another”, it is the same with any sin. If we refuse to shine the Light of Christ into the darkness of our lives, sin will abound. If we refuse to shine His Light before men, then men will die, because sin brings death.
Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
As this writer sits here I am experiencing a brown out in my house. You know when the lights go slightly dim and then back to full force. That is what happens in a Christians’ life who allows sin to dictate whether they will shine or not.
Maybe you are reading this and wondering what sin is? Sin is anything that separates us from God. Since Jesus is our light source, when we do things that hurt Him, it causes a separation. Unless we stay connected, through repentance, we will grow dimmer and dimmer. The result is utter darkness. What kind of Christian are you today? Are you shining bright and recognizable by those around you? Or are you like a flashlight in need of new batteries, very dim or totally useless?
