Through the window, past the rain,
comfort stood beyond haze of pain
that kept me tied, trapped inside
this darkened house where I abide.
Peace would come no nearer to me
than just beyond the cresting sea,
there where life begins and
the shadow of pain dims.
So close that I could see
the treasures shown to me
I had but to walk out the door
to stand on the sunset shore
Yet what I could not tell,
from within my mortal shell
the pain of a heart torn,
the price of this load born
What little I know and see of
what is past and what will be,
that each grief laden heart,
each soul would have a part
in the unfolding of an eternal tale.
Each life in balance on an ivory scale.
So little care of others needs,
only selfish will did I heed,
Till shown to me another’s loss
and laid over my heart the cross.
Seeing the world through another’s pain,
with darkened brow and blood stain
Viewing that sweet sacrifice,
dark prelude to paradise
and understand in one moment,
the true cost of my atonement.
