My first memory of Vestal, was when I was just a wee lil one.. watching telivision. She was on a show called PTL and I remember her as a funny
lady. She seemed like she loved people... Vestal was a gospel singer of many hymns and choruses.
I grew up in a home that cherished the ole time hymns. To be honest, when I was younger I never really appreciated those great songs and their value to us. Value in their heritage, in their words and the stories behind them.
Music can reach a soul so much more than the spoken word. God had and still has his hand on the ole' gospel hymns. They do not write them
like "the old rugged cross", "what a friend we have in Jesus" or the words that said... "mercy there was great and grace was free… " That
says it all…
Vestal was a singer of these songs. But the neatest thing was that all types of artists were drawn to her. The Katinas, Mark Lowry and even those outside the Christian field… What drew them to Vestal…? Was it her powerful voice, or maybe her colorful outfits? I think what drew them to her was the "LOVE OF GOD" that was visible in
her eyes, voice and ministry.
Vestal, I am gonna miss seeing you and listening to your songs of LOVE of your GOD. Howard, I want to join ya for choruses of "Wouldn't take nothing for my journey now" So save me a space in
that choir. But until then I am gonna sing those ole time songs and think of those who too have sung and lived those songs and now are
seeing that "Mercy there was great… and grace (GOD' S AMAZING GRACE)
In the name of our Lord and Savior, "another singer for HIM"

I, too, loved Vestal! She sang me through many storms. In fact, last Friday night a southern gospel ladies' trio I sing in performed with Palmetto State Quartet and at the end of the service another VESTAL FAN gave me a VESTAL BEAR. It is adorable, even has the hankie. HA! Thank you for this beautiful tribute to a beautiful lady!
Hi Debra, Welcome to Faithwriters! I loved your tribute to Vestal Goodman. She was one special lady with a powerful voice, that touched many people. I just love her singing, and no music collection would be complete without her music included!I too grew up listening to Vestal and the Goodman's gospel music and no one can sing as they did. Thank you for sharing this. Bessie
