Never in my mind, would I have imagined that one day my mama
would actually help me with the birth of my mare Morning Star.
She surprised me when she offered to help.
I had bought an Appaloosa mare that had been bred to a Golden Palomino. I had been riding horses all my life, but did not know much about the ends and outs of horse birthing. I began to study and learn all that I could in order to care for my pregnant horse. It was an exciting time, and I was looking forward to the birth.
I worked as a Registered Nurse on the night shift and I would check on my horses every morning before going to bed. I was keeping a close watch on my mare particularly , because she was due to foal anytime.
It was Easter Morning, I came in from work and made my way to the barn. I checked my mare first thing and sure enough it was time for her to foal.I ran up to the house and called my Veterinarian. Dr. Seal, told me "to get everything ready and he would be there in a hour."
My parents were staying with us at that time. Mama was the only one up. I told her that I was going to the barn and get everything ready for Dr. Seal. She said ,”I will get ready and come help you.“ I don't think she knew what she was getting into, I agreed to let her come along. I would give anything to have had a video camera so I could have taped what happened next.
To get a good picture in your mind, I am going to describe to you what my mama looked like when she came down to the barn. I am tall and my mama is short. This is important to help you visualize in your mind, my mama's attire that she had carefully selected for the special occassion.
I was busy getting all the supplies out for Dr. Seal, then I heard foot steps approaching.Looking up I saw my mama coming towards the stall entrance.First thing I noticed, she was wearing my rubber boots that came to her knees. Then the next thing I noticed , she was wearing a pair of daddy's bluejeans that were about three sizes to big for her.She had on one of my old straw hats that I wore in the garden, half of the brim on the
hat had been chewed off by my dog. Mama was a sight to behold.
Then she places her hands on her hips and did a little dance while quoting a line from the Gone With The Wind Novel. "Here I is,I don't know nothing about birthing babies, but here I is."
Yes, I see that mama, I turned my head to keep from laughing. She was hillarious. I continued to prepare everything as I waited for Dr. Seal.
Dr. Seal showed up and gave my mare some medicine to speed the up the labor process. We finally saw a pair of front legs with white socks decorated with pepper spots. At first we thought it was another Appaloosa. “Nope , it is a Buckskin” Dr. Seal shouted with joy.Fancy was having trouble pushing the foal out. The front legs had came out and she kept trying to get up while Dr. Seal was trying to pull the foal free. He told me to sit down on the horse’s neck to hold her down. He quickly changed his mind and had me to come there and take hold of one of the legs. Then my mama was told to sit on the horse to hold her down while he and I pulled the foal free.
She was standing there with this bewildered look on her face and her arms flapping in the air. “ Where do I sit,”she hollered as she looked all around for clues.Dr. Seal, screams out ,his face already beading with sweat, "Just sit on her shoulder."
Mama quickly slings her backside around and falls down on the horse. Dr. Seal and I continued to work to pull the foal free. He had one leg , and I the other. Our feet were buried in the mares rump for pulling leverage and the back of our heads were pressed against the feeding trough in the stall. I was tiring quickly, and his face was red. It wasn’t much longer and Morning Star made her way into this world. A beautiful Buckskin. What a day for all of us.
That was six years ago. Mama and I still talk about that day when we became instant Veterinarian Assistants and helped Morning Star make her entrance into this world . We have even thought about writing a book . Crash Course Horse Delivery Veterinarian Style.
I have to admit, Mama may have looked funny in that attire that she wore, but she turned out to be a pretty good partner afterall .
