Terms of Eternity
There are phrases of praise that you hear sometimes that catch you completed unguarded and off base. This morning I was taken by one of these collections of words. It is from a song by Small town Poets called “Any Other Love”. The premise of the song is how any of the “loves” we have in life pale in comparison to the love that is Christ Jesus.
The particular phrase is this, “its starting to sink in, the deeper I think in, these terms of eternity” These terms of eternity began a process of thought in my mind that just won’t stop percolating. Just what are these terms of eternity, anyway? Well at first brush, it could be describing the hereafter, heaven and all that lies in wait for us. That, could in itself, give birth to a plethora of explanations, descriptions of both what God has promised in His Kingdom and what we envision the afterlife to be. To me, spiritually, there is no other description better then what is found in His Word.
Almost as soon as all this finalized itself in my brain, I began to dismantle it, sort of like the church being taken apart brick by brick. I began to sense a whole new understanding of these, “terms of eternity”. I began to recognize that the terms are being defined as I write this, it is made up of all the encounters and circumstances in my life, it is made up of all the heartbreak I have felt and of all the heartbreak I have caused. It is being formed by me writing these thoughts (and by sharing them).
Our life, (and how we handle it) becomes the terms of eternity as we will have it. I sit and type this with a smile, no maybe a grin on my face, as I recognize that just as the song proclaims, it is sinking in, the deeper I think, the closer I seek to be to God, the closer He gets to me.
These terms of eternity that Smalltown sings about are not only the things to come, but they are things that are here, the things that we have endured. The good and the bad, all put together in His plan to make us who we are today and who we can become tomorrow.
The frustration, despair and anxiety we feel in our lives becomes the terms on which eternity will come to us as believers. There are no other terms I would rather accept then those that will bring me to eternity. Amen.
