Splashes of Joy

"He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." Prov. 11:25

It was a hot day in July. To help ease our misery, my three kids and I were engaged in a backyard water battle. The garden hose was my “weapon of choice” on that sultry afternoon.

That was many years ago, but if I listen close enough, I can still hear their delighted screams of joy, as they ran away from me.

It was impossible to stay dry, as I chased my prey, shot them down, and soaked them real good. Of course, that was part of the “battle strategy”, for the “chaser” to get a good soaking, too. “Splashes of joy” for my body and mind. The refresher was being refreshed!

Isn’t that true, in a spiritual sense? It is impossible to give out hope, or joy, or lend a hand to one in need, without some of it splashing back on you.

Perhaps that is due, in part, to the truth of another scripture, “A man reaps what he sows.” (Galatians 6:7b)

It may not happen quite as fast as my backyard battle might imply, but it will happen, my friend. When you reach out with what you have, be it a word of encouragement, a smile, a hug, or a loaf of bread, you are building up a reservoir in your own backyard.

One day, when you, the one who has refreshed others, are in need, you are going to get a good soaking of “goodness and mercy”. They’re going to chase you down and refresh your soul and your life. It is a spiritual law that cannot be nullified.

Knowing this, I encourage you, today, to get out your own “weapon of choice”. Don’t wait to be refreshed. Look for, and “chase down” one who needs refreshing. And always keep a towel close by.

“He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11:25b NIV)

Barabara I really enjoyed reading this today; You may know that I work with adults with learning disabilities, and despite the tiredness, I always receive so much in return, particularly in terms of accepting people just as they are.

Thank you for a truly refreshing story..reminds me of Galatians 6:9...Isn't it great to know your writing continues to touch people's lives long after you've written it!

Oh, Barbara, I loved this article! You wrote, "It is impossible to give out hope, or joy, or lend a hand to one in need, without some of it splashing back on you." That has happened to me so many times when I've called someone to offer encouragement and they have given me a lift, instead! When we reach out to share God's love, it splashes all over the place, and everything glistens! Bless you! Peggy

How true! What we give to others return to us in more ways than one, with splashes of joy and even unexpected blessings. Your article is a blessing to me today. May God bless you abundantly in return. Amen!

Again my dear sister you have touched on the theme, even this morning, that the Lord was speaking to me! Ruth 2:16 and let also fall some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not. Ruth was a stranger in the land, but the kindness poured on her by Boaz, is the example for us today! Thank youi dear sister for your obedience in writing. I love how God confirms His Word! I think I shall now go get my water hose turned on and grab a towel! God bless, YSICJ, Jounda

Thank you for splashing this joy upon everyone by sharing this. You reminded me of a water gun fight this summer with my three angels. I preferred the "supersoaker" water gun. You pump it up with power and shoot it 150 feet. That way, I don't have to run as fast as the others. : ) Blessings
