(I do not claim to have one clue as to what the survivors of hurricane Katrina are experiencing. These words came to me, and so I post them, and
I pray.)
I am one,
just one among thousands
lost in the crowd;
sick in body
weary in mind.
Dirty, tired and sweaty
hungry and thirsty,
oh, so thirsty!
Feelings of
abandonment.
Confusion and despair
welcome me
among thousands
of unknown faces.
Accusations
hate, rage-
shots fired out
rape and murder!
Oh, my God
have mercy on me!
I’m so afraid.
Where are my loved ones?
Where are you?
Have I been forgotten?
Will I live to see tomorrow?
When will help come
so this nightmare
can end?
Questions without answers.
Among the stench
and noise
I remember the fragrance of
the roses.
Prosperity serenaded me-
fear had no power
in my life.
These memories carry me,
empowering me
to reach out
in faith,
embracing Hope-
the anchor of my soul,
as I sit among thousands
where I am one,
just one.
"God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me.
Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness
that covers my face." Job 23:16,17 NIV

What a beautiful heart felt poem. Very caring and compassionate. We must continue to keep the Hurricane Katrina victims in our prayers. There are so many of them who are still without homes and jobs. Thanks for sharing and caring. God bless you and keep writing for His glory. Your friend in Christ, Patricia
This is very good. I am a Katrina evacuee, but not a survivor of the true horror. I loved the echo of being one, just one amongst so many in horrible circumstances. How alone they must have felt...and yet, Hope was there if they knew where to find Him.
This has been the hardest experience of my life, but God is using even this for good. Thank you for sharing these words of hope and compassion. It helps.
The compassion you felt came through in "I'm One Just One" I am feeling it in the verses.
"the anchor of my soul as I sit among thousands where I am one, just one."
Wow! An Excellent Poem. Thanks for sharing. Blessings, Helen
