Kids & Parenting
I was standing at the kitchen sink, doing the dishes for the fiftieth time that day, when my daughter (age 3) walked into the kitchen. She hugged my leg and said "Hi Mommy". I looked down and started crying hysterically! There on the top of my daughter's lovely strawberry blonde head was a bald spot! Not a little one, but a triangle about the size of a folded in half dollar! She had cut her hair down to the scalp! For the life of me, I could not figure out where she had acquired a pair of scissors as I have them all well hidden out of her reach. Then I discovered the full situation. My niece, who is 8, had brought her scissors home from school and had let my daughter play with them. Safety scissors huh? Well, they may not cut off a finger, but they sure cut hair nicely! So, now I am hysterical and my daughter is trying to figure out what is wrong with mommy. I totally fell apart. I called my mom. She about died. Then she starts trying to calm me down. Finally, I realized that I needed to pray about my reaction. After all, I am a mom to four little ones. I can't very well be a basket case and take care of them as well. So, I turned to God for help. I prayed for peace and for the anger and frusteration to leave me. I just totally gave in to him. God is amazing. He totally calmed my heart. In just a matter of minutes, I went from raving lunatic, to calm mommy who was ready to clean up the mess and play with the kids again. God also taught me something that day. My children are gifts that I am blessed with. They will frusterate me from time to time just like we frusterate Him. We all make mistakes, but God doesn't wipe us off the face of the Earth just because of them. In the same manner, I need to treat my children the same way. I love my kids more and more every day as I realize just how much my Lord loves me.
