pray and watch
Pray and watch
Col 4:2 Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.
Now then brethren, we come to our greatest privilege as sons and daughters of our Father in heaven.
I think this is a great place to examine our thoughts and beliefs of what we think prayer is.
Since we are not children of darkness and we have the scriptures to illuminate our spiritual insight, let us do all things with understanding that our hope may not be in vain.
Prayer is simply communicating to God.
What does Jesus have to say about this?
In the book of Luke we have an established outline.
Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
You see, even the disciples knew that their prayer life wasn’t as it should be or even could be.
They also knew that John’s disciples were taught to pray.
This was obviously a note worthy question and answer as Dr. Luke wrote about it.
Let us not feel ashamed or even hesitate to be about our own question, Lord, teach us to pray.
So He said to them, “ when you pray, say
Our father in heaven
Hallowed be Your name
Your kingdom come
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us day by day our daily bread
And forgive us our sins
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us
And do not lead us into temptation
But deliver us from the evil one.
Our father in heaven- He is your Father, remember the love that takes place between a child and a Father
Hallowed be your name- let us not forget that He is also Holy and to be respected as Our Creator worthy of our lives and worship
Your kingdom come- Jesus tells us to pray for the future era to come, His return and this era to pass on.
Your will be done- God’s will is good and the knowledge of His good will brings repentance.
Not only from sin. but from applying our will before His which becomes sin.
On earth as it is in heaven- heaven is a wonderful place as His goodness reigns and love over us continually, amen?
Give us this day our daily bread- Jesus said not to worry about your food and clothes but we are to look to God to provide what He has for each day.
And forgive us our sins- don’t we desire to come to Him each time pure and clean?
For we also forgive everyone indebted to us- don’t we in the least owe this to every human no matter what the assault?
In such a short stay here in this world we have been forgiven, what a blessing.
Matt. 5:14 “if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”
Lead us not into temptation- God will keep us close to His heart if we give Him our heart.
But deliver us from the evil one- this prayer is that we may be obedient and not in need of sifting as Peter was.
And even is so then it should be His will above all else.
And in Mtt. 6:13 He ends with, “for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever amen.”
Mt. 6:5 And when you pray you shall not be like the hypocrites.
For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men.
What makes them hypocrites?
The word hypocrit meant actor in Jesus’s day and these people weren’t praying to the Lord, they were acting to gain favor of men and receive the praise that was actually due to God.
This was not a vile act that Christ was talking about, it was a vile condition of the heart, full of deceit.
Mt. 6:6 But you, when you pray, go into your room and pray to your Father who is in the secret place, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Mk. 10:38-42 Now it happened as they went that they entered a certain village and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.
And she had a sister called Mary who also sat at Jesus feet and heard His word.
But Martha was distracted with much serving and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me”
And Jesus answered and said to her, “ Martha, Martha you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Wow Christian, that good part that she has chosen will not be taken away from her.
We see first of all that it is a choice whether or not we find the time to sit at the feet of Christ.
Second, what is it that will not be taken?
We will be filled with His Spirit and taught by Him.
And this will not be taken away from us.
Everything else in this world is dust in the wind, all that is left for man is to fear God and keep His commandments for God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.
Are all of our prayers answered?
Mtt. 21:20-22 And when the disciples saw it they marveled, saying “how did this fig tree wither away so soon?”
So Jesus answered and said to them, “ Assuredly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘be removed and be cast into the sea’ it will be done.
“And what ever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”
Jn 16:23-24 “And in that day you will ask me nothing.
Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the father in my name He will give you.
Until now you have asked nothing in my name.
Ask and you shall receive that your joy may be full.”
Mk. 11:9-13 “ So I say to you, ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened .
If a son asks for a loaf of bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?
Or if he asks for an egg will he offer him a scorpion?
If you then being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
I think the last sentence really clues us in as to what it is that we need to be seeking.
Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven and all other things will be added unto you.
Let’s look at some scripture to help us with a deeper understanding of Jesus telling us that we will receive what ever we ask for in belief.
Jn. 15:4-8 “Abide in me and I in you.
As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
I am the vine you are the branches.
He who abides in me and I in him, bears much fruit, for without me you can do nothing.
Anyone does not abide in me he is cast out as a branch and is withered, and they gfather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.
If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you will ask what you desire and it will be done for you.
By this my Father is glorified that you bear much fruit, so you will be my disciples.”
