Jesus Christ friend of Eternity.
“Greater love has no one than this, that He lay down His life for His friends.” John 15:13
Today when the world around us seems to fall apart from every aspects of our life, we as humans are in search of true friends and true love, and this search of finding the true friend starts from the very beginning of our childhood as we as humans are full of emotions, we like to love others and we expect others also to love us, we as humans are created by the Lord in such a manner that we always have deep craving within our own hearts to have our socio- emotional relationship the best we can have. We are sometimes sad, happy, angry, frustrated, sometimes we feel at the top of the world and sometimes we feel that nothing is going as the way we wish and while we pass through the different human emotional cycles we always need a true friend with whom we can share every aspect of our day today life, that they will be with us in every rough and smooth times of our life, and very often we hear people saying that “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”
Bible records some of the great instances of friendship. One such friendship that’s recorded in the Bible is of David and Jonathan. David was chased by King Saul to kill him, as King Saul was jealous of David because whatever Saul sent him to do, David did it so successfully and he ranked David in a higher rank in the army; for David killed the philistine and David was praised by all the people in Israel, with dance and songs and they sang, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten of Thousands.” Saul became very angry and this refrain galled him and after this incident King Saul was taken over by an evil- spirit and was always in the search of the opportunity to kill David, but amidst all these things happening Lord God Almighty was doing mighty things in the favor of David as he was chosen instrument of the Lord Almighty. The incident that made Saul jealous of David the same incident made Jonathan and David great friends forever. Bible says that Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. And when Jonathan came to know that his father King Saul was furious to kill David, he as the friend of David helped him to hid in the field from the attacks of his father King Saul, for Jonathan knew that what his father was doing was not righteous. As soon as Jonathan knew about the evil thoughts about his father to kill David, he met David in the fields where he was hiding and said, “Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord, saying, “The Lord is witness between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever.” And Bible records that when David became King, he inquired of anyone who was left in the house of Saul to whom he can show kindness for the sake of Jonathan. And Ziba a servant of Saul’s household informed King David that there is still a son of Jonathan; who is crippled in both the feet’s. When the son of Jonathan Mephibosheth came to meet King David, he doesn’t be afraid, for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land tat belonged to your grandfather Saul and you will always eat at my table.” This is how King David remembered, honored and fulfilled his friendship covenant that he and Jonathan made between them.
But one of the most intriguing friendship that Bible records is of the friendship of the Lord Jesus Christ with his disciples and especially for Judas Iscariot. Jesus Christ, who is the son of most High God, the Lord of eternity, knew from the beginning that He was going to be betrayed by one of His disciples- Judas Iscariot. Bible records that Judas Iscariot was one of most favorite and loved Disciples of Christ Jesus. Judas Iscariot always sat next to the Lord with his head leaned upon the chest of the Lord. From the very beginning of Christ’s ministry He knew that His disciples will deny him, reject him, betray him and at the time he most wanted them as his friends they will all run away from him, keeping him all alone to go through pain, agony, sorrow, distress and what not, but He never disliked them, He never hated them, He never got angry upon them, He never denied them, He never disowned them rather He always loved them, instructed them, gave them great opportunity to become His disciples and friends, He always told them what they should do and what they shouldn’t, because He knew He has to go from all these for the salvation of entire human race. His love and His friendship was shown in such a higher respect of degree that when He along with all His disciples met for the supper, He washed the feet’s of His disciples giving unto them and us an example that what a disciple and friend of Christ should be like. He gave them and us a new commandment “Love another, just as I love you.” He told them that you are my friends, if you do what I command you to do, I do not call you servants any longer, for the servant does not what master is doing, Instead I have called you friends, for everything I learned from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I have chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last.
So many times we as His servants have failed to do what Lord has asked us to do, but we fail to simply recognize that He has called us to be His friends and not servant, if at all we have Christ we do not treat Him and accept him as our friend ,Christ wants you and me to be His friends, friends & friendship that will last for eternity, who will never leave us nor forsake us, for He knows what s it’s like to be all alone in these perilous and an day by day dying world. If you haven’t met this every lasting friend named Jesus Christ of Nazareth then this is the right time to call upon Him and make Him your everlasting friend, to become His friend you have to receive him as your Lord & Saviour, just pray this prayer of repentance and He will become your Lord, Saviour, Friend, wonderful counselor, and a Good Shepherd.
