Why I Hate My Job…Part I
10 of the Worst Rules at Work
People have asked me, “Why don’t you just leave your job and apply for a new one.” Well, jobs don’t grow on trees, especially were I live. My husband and I both work full-time jobs to not only pay the bills but to support our writing careers. I long for the day that I can work full-time from home (for myself) not someone else.
I have worked in corporate America for 10 years and I must say it has been an up hill battle.
The following information is true. This is a list of the 10 worst rules that I have experienced while working at various multi billion dollar corporations in the USA.
(This could be your bank customer service center, your credit card company, cell phone provider or cable company.)
1. You must sign in and out on bathroom breaks on a clipboard. The clipboard will be placed on a supervisor’s desk.
a. The Company: If you use the bathroom you must flip the sign to red which means ‘occupied’ when you are finished you must switch it back to ‘green’ which means ‘vacant’.
2. A pregnant woman was rushed to the hospital on her way to work because she went into false labor. Upon return the next day she was given a verbal warning and written up.
a. The Company: “We are flexible with people who have medical issues such as pregnancy. If you are pregnant and you are sent to the hospital during your pregnancy and you take the day off you must call in and ask for E-Time. E-Time is when you are given time off if the call volume is very low. E-Time is not paid E-Time. If E-Time is unavailable you must come into work.”
3. This fortune 500 communications company does not offer their employees sick days. Only supervisors are given sick days. If you are absent more than 4 times in one year you will be suspended or terminated.
a. A woman had a stomach virus and was vomiting throughout the day. She decided to take off the following day. Management called her house several times to see if she could come into work. The next day she came back and her supervisor says, “I understand that people do get sick…do whatever you have to do…pop in the Imodium if you have to.”
“I was sick…what am I suppose to do if I’m throwing up?” asked the employee.
“Place a bucket along side your desk if you have to…we need people to be here.”
4. An employee called in sick and the office manager called his house. Nobody answered so she assumed that he was not sick. She went to his house to see for herself if he was really sick. The employee was sick; he decided to get out of the house in hopes to feel better. Because he was not at home in bed, that was used against him.
5. One February morning it was snowing by the inches. All schools were closed and after school activities were cancelled. My husband said, “The roads are bad Danielle, maybe you shouldn’t go into work.” I called my supervisor and said that I wouldn’t be able to come in because I was snowed in and the roads were not plowed yet. She says to me, “There are other people who live in the Pocono Mountains and they are here…you should be here Danielle. The customer comes first in this business.” There was no way that I would be able to go into work unless I had a helicopter. My supervisor and office manager called me five times to convince me to come in. When I returned to work I was written up.
6. All supervisors were given a huge Christmas party at a catering hall outside of town. All other employees were forced to work Christmas day and could not schedule days off or vacation days during the holiday. Although this company is a multi-billion dollar organization we did not receive any bonuses or gifts. Not even a holiday card from the CEO. The office manager placed cards into our mail boxes with candy canes attached to them. The card read, ‘Happy Holiday’s, Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.’ The office manager didn’t even take time to place our names on the envelops or inside the cards.
On Christmas day we were told that management was going to bring in food. They fed us stale bread, cold cuts and a left over chocolate candies.
