IN LIVING COLOR

Sightseeing involves our senses. No matter where we travel – it could be around the block or on a vacation, to another state or to a country, wherever we go we discover simple displays of beauty.

There are many words that describe sightseeing. Some are: scenery, views, landscapes, color,
images and portraits. With each description we see vibrancy, hues, tints, and shades. Some of the images I have in living color are: a majestic mountain, the morning sun as it pierces through the clouds, and the powerful reds and pinks of a glowing sunset. Or my granddaughter as she kisses a puppy as he slobbers wet kisses on her, and the witnessing of sweet reconciliation of two who have argued. Eleanor Duse said, “If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple things have a message you understand, Rejoice, for your soul is alive.” She is absolutely right. Sightseeing touches our hearts and our sensory perception beyond words. It is this type of sightseeing that takes our breath away.

My living color is also seen in my imagination. Though I have never had the pleasure of seeing a
lighthouse or embarking on a cruise, I imagine as I sit in my office where the border on my walls are of lighthouses. As I gaze at the lighthouses and boats, I imagine first-hand the tower that helped the sailors find their position on the ocean letting them know that land was near. It also warned them of dangerous rocks and reefs. The signal emitted light so that the sailors could focus on the light amid the storm. I can feel the tension aboard the ship. I see the wind and the storm threatening to drive the ship off course. I feel the driving rain upon my face. I see the fear among the sailors. But then I am drawn back to the serenity of calm days and where the lighthouse stands as a reminder of past days and mariners.

There was a time in my life when I had gone off sightseeing in the world’s ocean. My ship was
on the verge of crashing when a light from Heaven’s lighthouse shone and directed me to safety and into His refuge. Elvis Presley recorded the song, The Lighthouse, and its words are this: “If it wasn’t for the lighthouse; I don’t know where this ship would be.” Sightseeing became sight-seeing by faith.

God’s Word takes us on many tours in living color. I love Colossians 3:1-4 LNT: “Since you
became alive again, so to speak, when Christ arose from the dead, now set your sights on the rich treasures and joys of heaven where He sits beside God in the place of honor and power. Let heaven fill your thoughts; don’t spend your time worrying about things down here. You should have as little desire for this world as a dead person does. Your real life is in heaven with Christ and God. And when Christ who is our real life comes back again, you will shine with Him and share in all His glories.” These verses talk about past, present and future trips with our Savior. Sightseeing in this world causes worries, but when we look through heavenly eyes in living color we see rich treasures and joys of heaven while sharing in all of His glories!
