Can a Christian believe in astrology

Though most of the people who believe in astrology are illiterate, it is observed that educated people the world over has started asking each other what sign they were born under? Astrological literature is flourishing as never before. Many scientists and investigators are quietly gathering astrological data and testing them in various fields.

Astrology originated when man’s knowledge of astronomy and the universe was wrong. Hence astrological calculations were arrived on wrong data. Of the nine planets (navagraha) of astrologers only five are real planets. Of the remaining four, one is a star and another satellite. The remaining two do not exist at all! Moreover scientists keep discovering new planets and stars. It is foolish to relate our lives with them. The grouping of stars called constellations has changed drastically due to the gradual movement of the Earth’s poles since the Babylonians first outlined them 4000 years ago. The sign Aeries now almost completely corresponds with the constellation Pisces. Neptune and Pluto were only discovered in 1846 and 1930 respectively. How can you derive conclusions on the basis of wrong data? How does one estimate the exact time of birth, considering the gap between the moment the head of a child meets the pelvic floor and the emergence of the last limb is about two hours?

Astrological charts are prepared according to the relative visual positions of the so-called planets in the twelve zodiacal constellations at the time of birth of a person. As the solar planets and the zodiacal stars are millions of miles away from the earth their visual positions at any moment are only virtual and not real. In preparing the chart for a person, astrologers make use of the wrong virtual positions of the planets. If they have the knowledge and ability to calculate and find the real positions of the planets through astronomical calculations perhaps astrologers themselves will lose faith in their cult!

Since light from planets and stars takes several minutes to millions of years to reach earth, it is clear that astrologers’ charts are wrong by several minutes to millions of years!

Ask people why they believe what an astrologist, fortune-teller or a palmist predicts. They invariably say that this has been existing from ancient times and that even scientists believe in it! Man, but why do you believe? Believing in astrology on the ground that Newton and Carl Jung believed is as absurd as drinking urine as a curative medicine on the ground that a Prime Minister of a country did so! Some believe Gauquelin’s 1955 study as evidence in favour of astrology, not knowing that the man could not replicate his findings. Towards the end of his life, Gauquelin turned into a hostile sceptic. One cannot accept blindly all that Charles Darwin or Albert Einstein said or followed. History has lot more examples of beliefs of famous thinkers, philosophers and scientists proving to be wrong and absurd in course of time. False concept will never become right just because the majority of people believe it or because it is believed from ancient times or because there are eminent scientists among the believers. He who is prepared to believe without verification is not wise!

The story is told of ten girls who went to an astrologer one by one and asked him to predict whether she would have a boy or girl after marriage. The fortune-teller told everyone the same ‘prediction’ that she would have a boy only after marriage. All of them left to different places and got married subsequently. Purely by chance, six of them had boys! All the six started believing that the astrologer was perfectly right and started believing in astrology and followed him as a ‘guru.’

Not long ago, the press reported two instances happened in an Indian State where couples killed their only sons and offered them to their gods on the advice of their astrologers who predicted solutions for their problems and the government later called them ‘quacks’ and sent them to prison.

Classification of horoscope is based on twelve signs. How absurd to believe that 537 millions of people of the world of population over 6450 millions have just the same things happening in their lives ever since they were born? How absurd to believe that 25 millions of people of America of population over 300 millions have just the same things happening in their lives ever since they were born? Have you ever come across just one person in your neighborhood or acquaintances sharing the same happenings in his/her life as of yours?

Here is an amazing truth. Astrologers and palmists cannot make better predictions than a layman like you and I who can only guess! When you are experiencing suffering and pain you tend to believe in Astrologers who take advantage of your situation, connect cosmic forces and movements of planets and treat your feelings of helplessness and meaninglessness. Astrology does not have a scientific basis at all.

Anything can happen to any one at any age or any time! You do not know and you do not have control over it. Out of the same clay, a potter can make a flower vase or a vessel meant for wash rooms. The vessel in the wash room cannot question the potter as to why it was not made to be a flower vase! God created us and has different plans for different people.

You cannot foretell or have control over your future. Bandaranaike, the formerly Prime Minister of Sri Lanka postponed his oath taking ceremony by 30 minutes at the instance of his family astrologer to an ‘auspicious’ time but was assassinated before he completed his term. Yet, lots of politicians in Asia who aspire thrones take their oaths only at ‘auspicious’ times fixed by their so-called astrologers.
Those who have insecurity and fear of future and those who use short methods to achieve their goals tend to believe the so-called astrologers. It is possible that you are convinced of the myth of this ancient cult and still do not venture to shun this belief because of fear of future and people around you, your family, relatives and friends who in turn do not venture to shun this belief with a view to pleasing people like you!
Some believe that the three wise men referred in the Bible were astrologers because they read the signs in the heavens and followed the North Star. They say, “When the Bible talks about 'the stars', it is talking about Astrology." Many people are out there spreading misinterpreted gospel, and the bottom line is, it's dangerous.

Let's examine what the Bible really says.

Isaiah 47:13-14: All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you. Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. Here are no coals to warm anyone; here is no fire to sit by.

Deuteronomy 4:19: "Be careful that you don't worship the sun, moon, and stars."

Deuteronomy 17:2-5 says that those who worshipped the sun, moon, or stars were to be stoned.

Leviticus 20:6 says God will separate himself from those who go after mediums and familiar spirits.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 says that practicing witchcraft, sorcery, soothsaying, interpreting omens, making spells, and being a medium or spiritist, are all terrible sins to God.

Daniel 2:27-28 talks of how God kept King Nebuchadnezzar's dream and its interpretation secret from the astrologers, magicians or dream interpreters, and soothsayers. However, he revealed it to his prophet Daniel.

Acts 16:16-18 talks of a girl who was possessed by an evil spirit that enabled her to be a fortune teller. Paul commanded the evil spirit to come out of her in the name or authority of Jesus, and the spirit left her:

Deuteronomy 18:9-11: "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft..."

2 Chronicles 33:5-7: "He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced sorcery, divination and witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger."

Throughout the entire Bible God allows only His prophets to accurately interpret any kind of "signs". It is important to realize that, when the Bible talks about signs in the stars, heavens, or whatever, they're usually literal signs:

Luke 21:24-26 says, "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.

Your eternal destiny depends on this! Where you will be 100 years from now and 100 trillion years from now depends on what you do with the message of the Bible, which has been uniquely endorsed by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself to be the only standard of truth that should govern our religious lives. The Bible is the final authority!
