On the Day I Interview Myself
By Wendy Stewart-Hamilton
One day I will interview myself.
I’ll ask me all the hard questions and
Not accept ‘no comment’ for an answer.
I’ll ask questions that lead me
To think beyond the limits of the present;
The confines of the past;
And the desires of the future.
I’ll not accept that all is out of my control,
For I know Free Will is a choice given to me.
I can choose to be inspired.
I can choose to be motivated.
I can choose to be the one God
Designed me to be.
On the day I interview myself
I’ll ask me why I waited so long.
I’ll ask me why I keep waiting.
I’ll remind myself that it’s not good to wait.
By now in my interview, I will have thoroughly
Convinced myself of something I knew all along:
Today is life’s present gift.
On the day I interview myself
I’ll ask myself what really makes me, Me.
I’m sure at first I’ll respond with
An answer like “God’s design”, that
I know will not be enough.
I then will lead more with my heart
And talk about how I love people.
How their victories make me smile
How their losses make me weep
And how I need them as much as
I think they need me.
I’ll talk about my burden.
My dream.
My vision.
My idea,
To create something so adventurous
That I wonder how I could even think
On so broad a scheme.
I’ll sit back and smile knowing that
My interview has hit the heart of
My fears, my insecurities and has
Declared them all relatively unimportant.
Because I, too, have a dream.
By this very act of possession I am listed
Among the greatest that ever walked
On the face of the earth, who thought
Themselves to be the least.
On the day I interview myself
I’ll realize why big dreams
Are given to the little Man,
Because we trust not in ourselves
But in a bigger God.
As I answer, I will realize my burden.
My dream.
My vision.
My idea.
Weren’t really my own at all.
They were taken from a book in Heaven
Called “Herein Lies Your Story”
As I talk, I’ll realize that my life
Is being checked off.
Been there, done that.
And I am eternally grateful
For a second chance.
I’ll pause for a minute
Smile my favorite smile
And turn tables on my Interviewer
“Do you think God has neat handwriting?”
I’ll laugh with myself at
My inside joke and the interview will
Continue and continue.
On the day I interview myself,
I will realize that I must always
Ask questions, seek answers
Find knowledge, Hunt Wisdom
Keep treasures, Guard Secrets
Be faithful, Be noble,
Honorable, Worthy, Precious,
Gracious, and a good steward
Of all I’ve been given.
On the day I interview myself
I’ll lean forward and whisper
“You know this interview isn’t over?”
I’ll answer back, with the same
Favorite smile,
“I know.”
“God’s not finished with me, yet.”
