Lord
What can I say to a mother
Whose heart is broken
As she weeps for a child
who will soon be gone
Lord
what can I say to a mother
whose love is not enough
to rescue a dying son
from the grasp of a disease
he knows nothing about
Lord
what can I say to a mother
whose generation bears a scourge
a plague of horrific dimensions
the scars of HIV/AIDS
the stream of tears it leaves
Lord
what can I say to a mother
as she looks me in the eye
‘will my son survive?’
she asks a mere mortal
Lord
what can I say to a mother
as I search for answers;
I wish I had an answer for every question
A comfort for every tear
A healing balm for every hurt
Lord
What can I say to a mother
In such a dilemma
The best of words would fail me
Too unholy for the moment
So perhaps, I’ll just shut up
And point to the sky above.
