"Is it well with thee? Is it well with thy husband? Is it well with the child? And she answered it is well" (2 Kings 4:6)
When you read the story of the Shummanite woman found in the Book of Second Kings, chapters 3 and 4, of the Old Testament. The Scriptures tell us that this extraordinary woman from Shumen was also a rich woman. Her heritage and inheritance was one of wealth. She was a well-placed pillar in society. Outwardly, all was well with her but, unfortunately personal circumstances will never supply a right answer and personal circumstances do not make a soul well!
This woman also had a very happy home, but yet again the happiness of having a happy home does not cause the healing of one's soul. And a happy home does not necessarily mean one has a healthy heart. The heart of man needs more than just a happy home. Circumstances at home do not also supply the right answer. These chapters of Scripture concerning the Shummanite woman also reveal to the reader that it was harvest time in the land; this would have been a most pleasant time - a time for laughter, rejoicing, and singing. But harvest circumstances do not necessarily supply the right answer.
Those of us who do answer "IT IS WELL!" prompted by personal, home or outward circumstances are I'm sorry to say are deceiving themselves.
The Shummanite woman left the corpse of her only son and a remarkably unfeeling husband at home and saddled a donkey and carried a broken heart with her as she journeyed all the way to see God's 'Prophet of Fire' - Elijah. Yet, she could say, "IT IS WELL!"
Why? Because this remarkable woman had the secret of - FAITH. Her faith was unshakable, unmoving, unstoppable, unbelivable!!
This is the only victory which overcomes the world today at all times and in every circumstance. Have you got that secret faith to say, "It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well, it is well with my soul.....??!!
