OFFENDED READER

Dear Writer of Articles,

Not so very long ago, I read your article, ‘Lessons from the Garden,’ and I really must say that I am highly offended. You see, after reading about the weeds, I decided that if Jesus could leave the weeds until the end of the age, that was good enough for me. I now find myself knee-deep in weeds, with nary a carrot in sight! My once lovely garden is now an unsightly weed patch, and it is entirely your fault!

Just sign me,
Highly Offended in Succotash, Colorado

My dear Highly Offended,

Is there really a Succotash, Colorado? Whatever, I do believe I can help you with your problem. You see, as we all occasionally do, you have applied a spiritual truth to a natural scenario. Yes, even I, Writer of Articles, have made the same mistake.

An example of this is when I believed I had heard the Lord say, “Make a necklace!” Well, that didn’t seem to fit with what He had said earlier, which was that I had too many hobbies. However, I had recently purchased some very inexpensive cultured pearls, so I eagerly sat down to apply, “Make a necklace!” by making – what else – a necklace!

Sad to say, the project didn’t turn out as I had hoped – which was a lovely string of cultured pearls to hang around my neck. These fine though inexpensive pearls, it seemed, did not have a hole big enough to accommodate any sort of string for stringing. The only ones who seemed to get anything out of the entire frustrating project were my cats, who are always highly amused by anything pertaining to string.

I didn’t forget the whispered command, however, and soon came upon the following lovely verses from Proverbs, NASB:
Proverbs 3:3 – Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart.
Proverbs 3:21 – 22 – My son, let them not vanish from your sight; Keep sound wisdom and discretion, so they will be life to your soul and adornment to your neck.

Now I understand – the Lord wants me to fashion a necklace and hang it around my neck – using the truly fine pearls of wisdom, kindness, truth and discretion!

Signed,
Ever-learning Writer of Articles

P.S. Good luck with your garden!
