St. Matthew 5:44-46: Jesus says ye have heard that it hath been said thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy but I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you do good to them that hate you and pray for them which despitefully use you that ye may be the children of your father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and the good and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same?
Love is the essence of Christianity. It is what distinguishes the true Living God from the false and confirms the authenticity of the faith. Love is a word that is rarely used yet, so powerful and is the reason we are saved. In the sermon on the mount, Jesus is teaching the multitude on what the fruit of the Spirit is like and how we are to conduct ourselves as children of God. Loving your enemies is a challenge because it is hard on the flesh. Sadly, a lot of saints are fighting each other with complete disregard to what Jesus said about love. Although Jesus was talking about loving your enemies, many neighbours have become enemies. How sad it is to have a brother in Christ as an enemy.
Some men in particular feel that it is not a manly thing to walk away from a confrontation because they believe that their manhood is challenged. If we love God but hate our brother how could the love of God dwell in us? We also have a hard time smiling at each other. I am by no means making excuses but this is true.
A perfect example of love is St. John 3:16, which says that God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. The scripture mentioned is an excellent meaning of love your enemies because the world hates Jesus Christ yet he went to the cross and died for them. Love is the fulfillment of the law. It is easy to love those who love us but loving those who hate us brings great reward from God. It is one of the factors that separate spiritual Christians from the carnal ones. The Bible says that love covers a multitude of sins.
Although love is a flesh killer; it is an inner man strengthener. The world needs to see Christ in us. So many people are hurting and reaching out but to the wrong places. The reality is that showing love to those who hate us is a process. We have to remember that hate destroys love builds. Love your enemies because the one you hate may be the one who God uses to bless you. Amen.
