A Portrait of Daddy
Brief moments of time
Ticking slowly into years
A father and his daughter
Share both laughter and tears
A lifetime of labors
With my welfare in mind
You were the shelter needed
Where I could run and hide
You stood as one unchanging
While the wind blew my desires
Supportive and encouraging
For all I might aspire
But my heart grew rebellious
As often hearts will do
Never knowing all the misery
My actions put you through
The constant grief and pain
That my rebellion birthed
Refused to be in vain
For God felt all your hurt
Looking down from heaven
Compassion kissed the skies
The agony of a broken child
This Father realized
And you remained still faithful
Steadfast, brave and firm
A pillar of strength in hardship
A rock to which I turn
Know Dad that your sacrifice
Mirrors a heavenly plan
Of laying down one’s life
For the sake of man
Now I cry out “Daddy!”
To another who is true
His never failing love
Reminds me much of you
As you have kept your daughter
So let the Lord keep you
In mercies never failing
In spirit and in truth
The labors very heavy
You’ve carried for so long
Will be borne upon His shoulders
Through our weakness He is strong
Daddy, I beseech you
Receive His gift today
It’s wrapped in lovingkindness
And delivered while you pray
