Second Corinthians 5:17 says Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; old things are passed away; behold all things have become new. It is important to realize that as Christians we are new creatures in Christ. Many of us have a past history that we are not proud of, a past that haunts us, and is horrible even in the eyes of the world. If we are going to be successful Christians we must understand that our past is not our present. God has forgiven us so we must forgive ourselves, and others who hurt us as well.
One thing the enemy will try to do is bring up your past again and again. On the job co- workers may remind you of things that you did but your past is not your present. Those friends that you used to hang out with will try to remind you of the places you visited but your past is present. Loved ones may talk to you as if you are not a Christian but your past is not your present.
The enemy will brings these things to your mind in an effort to draw you away from Christ, seeking to condemn you but the Word of God says there is therefore no condemnation to those who walk after the spirit and not the flesh. Condemnation does not come from God; it comes from the devil. God is not concerned with our past. He is concerned with our present and future in Christ. God is concerned that we grow in the image of Jesus. Once God forgives our sin he forgets them. It does not matter if we were a drug dealers, users, rapists, or murders. The past is the past. Now we are ambassadors for Jesus Christ. We are kings and rulers seated with Christ in heavenly places.
When we look at Saul in the book of Acts we see how he persecuted the church, hauling Christians off to jail left and right. Then the glorious light of Christ shined about him blinding him… now as Paul he has harmed no man. Paul`s past was erased from the mind of God. Paul was a new man in God and the old man was gone forever.
The slate has been wiped clean. The blood of Jesus has given you another chance to start over again. For example those of us who had a sexual active past are now virgins in Christ through repentance and the cleansing away of unrighteousness. No longer are we flesh but spirit wrapped in flesh. Many people who continue to live in their past may never get to their future. Despite your rough childhoods and all, your past is not your present. Amen.
