Have you ever been afraid? I know I have. We all know fear. It is the emotion that freezes us in our tracks Ė causes us to limit activities, or just plain not do anything.
Now I donít know about you but when I am afraid and someone tells me to just suck it up or just walk it off or any one of those 1001 other ways people want you tom just stop being afraid, it kind of upsets me.
I mean think about it here you are in the middle of a full blown anxiety ridden, sweat running your head type of fear and someone says just to walk it off.
I have news for them walking is not what I am thinking about at that exact moment is not walking, maybe running would be better. Running to the nearest exit and escaping to the wild where I can scream until I turn blue, but not walking of any kind.
Fear is real; at least it is real to the person going through it. Even Jesus exhibited fear. Remember the Garden of Gethsemane and how Jesus was so afraid that he sweated blood. I have never been that afraid of anything, but there are times I have felt close.
Sometimes to me just the mention of the word fear causes my mind to wander to a time when I was afraid and what source of that fear was. Franklin Roosevelt is often quoted as saying ď there is nothing to fear but fear itselfĒ.
I donít know about Roosevelt but it is not usually the fear I am afraid of it what is the source of that fear. You know the big dog saliva dripping from his, teeth, a look in his eyes that says he is trying to decide if he should go for the rump roast or not.
Maybe itís that room full of people who are counting on you to give this great speech and you canít even remember where or what the speech was about. These are the tings I get afraid of not fear.
I know what FDR was getting at was the idea that we cannot afford to let fear get such a grip on us to such a point as it stops us from doing what needs to be done, but in life it seems we are always afraid of something.
We are afraid of growing old, but it is inevitable. We re afraid of the darkness, but it must come. We are afraid of being lonely, but we are unwilling to do something about it.
We hate our jobs, but we are afraid of getting another one. We are afraid of being afraid but are unwilling to help ourselves stop being afraid because we area afraid.
Fear is all about the mind. Yes sometimes what we fear is only in our heads. Now donít get me wrong I know your fears may appear real but most of the times those fears are unfounded. In short to us, our fear is real to others there is nothing there.
Fear is one of those relative things. No I donít mean to be afraid of your relatives, well for some of you, you might be a little afraid. What I mean when we are afraid it is relative to us and sometimes we get so used to fear that we start to look around for things to be afraid of.
Why does fear hold such a grip on us? If we would just stop being afraid we could live our lives better then expected. We would take chances and not worry about the consequences.
We would not need to spend millions of dollars on drugs to help us stop being afraid. We are so consumed by the idea of fear that we seldom take a chance to discover if we actually did do the thing we are afraid of doing if our fears would be accurate or not.
For others fear is an adrenaline rush and they seem to not get enough of the stuff that fear is made of. These are the people I do not understand.
Donít get me wrong I admire you guys but I just donít understand pushing life to the edge and how that equates to fun. My idea of hanging out with friends is not at 2000 feet with nothing but a parachute keeping you from hitting ground. Give me a nice quiet beach any day.
Fear is one of those things that more we try to avoid it the more it will come. It is up to us to be like the people who use fear to create an adrenaline rush. These people look there fears in the face and instead of running away screaming they use there fear to enjoy life.
I am not saying we should do this all the time but I am convinced that most of time if we went in search of the source of our fears we would find nothing. So the next time you are afraid go in search of your fears and see what you find instead of allowing your fears to chase you away.
If you died today, are you absolutely certain that you would go to heaven? You can be! TRUST JESUS NOW
